Job Description

Directs and oversees planning, development and implementation of corporate communication strategies and tactics for internal, external, stakeholder, partner and media audiences.
Directs and monitors corporate writing services, including website copy, news releases, event materials, social media copy, handbooks, brochures, speaking notes, presentations, advertisements, poster copy and other related material.
Ensures quality of all writing meets corporate and industry standards and is consistent with corporate messaging.
Collaborates with marketing and design teams in developing and executing multimedia advertising campaigns including television, online video, radio, print, out-of-home, digital and social media to ensure consistency with corporate messaging and direction.
Oversees collaboration with Change Management around internal and external change initiatives and leads and manages required change management communications.
Represents the Communications department at the management level on corporate committees that develop policies and operational initiatives.
Liaises with Executive Council, the Minister’s office, Crown Investments Corporation, as well as contacts in other government ministries and agencies and other stakeholder groups on strategic communication issues.
Manages brand identity in area of responsibility.
Develops and monitors metrics and reporting for communications activities.
Leads the identification and mitigation of reputational risks through strategic communications.
Collaborates as a member of the corporation’s Crisis Communications Team, providing guidance and advice to respond to business continuity issues and crises when they arise.
Develops messaging and implements tactics to respond to crisis/issues management communications situations, involving external parties as required (Crown Investments Corp., Executive Council, Minister’s Office).
Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.
Ensures development of divisional succession plans.
Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.
Drives performance through team members and is committed to leadership development across the company, supporting employees and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.
Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.
Manages risk in area of authority.
Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets.
Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items.
Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.
Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.
Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines comply with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.
Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.
A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in Journalism, Communications Studies, Public Relations or a relevant field of study such as Business.
Ten years’ experience comprised of six years leadership experience with progressively challenging responsibility and four years experience in a directly related field such as communications or public relations.
Knowledge of the news media across the regions that SGI and SGI CANADA operate in.
Knowledge of strategic communication and social media principles and practices.
Knowledge of corporate governance, the services provided by the corporation, government and partner agencies, including knowledge of the operations of CIC, Cabinet, Caucus and related committees.
Knowledge of brand, marketing and advertising principles and practices.
Knowledge of the insurance industry.
Knowledge of organizational units, and how they interact to support the corporation’s operations.
Knowledge of how financial information contributes to management understanding and decisions.
Knowledge of project management and change management methodologies and techniques required to plan, manage and execute projects.
Skill in providing a customer-centric approach to communications.
Ability to write and speak clearly, concisely, persuasively and targeted to the appropriate audience.
Ability to balance multiple stakeholder demands and negotiate consensus on preferred approaches, dealing with sensitive issues professionally and discreetly.
Ability to identify issues that require communication intervention (issues management – proactive and reactive).

Pay Range: $119,744 to $159,666
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the planning, development and implementation of communication strategies for SGI, SGI CANADA and internal audiences, and for directing media relations for SGI, SGI CANADA and its regional operations. Collaborates with leadership on issues management and crisis communications, providing guidance and advice to internal and external stakeholders. Manages and monitors corporate writing services and represents the department on corporate committees that develop policies and initiatives. Liaises with the Minister’s Office, Executive Council and Crown Investments Corporation on strategic communication issues including communications items for Cabinet.
