      General Summary:

      The Director, Environment Health Safety (EHS) & Sustainability role is responsible for establishing and managing a well run environmental, health and safety program for a large site or multiple small sites, in conjunction with running a global environment health safety program. The role involves working closely with senior management to align on priorities, as well as working with other members of the environment, health, safety and sustainability (EHSS) team, Operations/Facilities team members, Legal and a broad range of business functions. This is a varied role which may require technical expertise in multiple disciplines including; chemical safety, biological safety, radiation safety or other physical agents, industrial hygiene, environmental programs, fire safety, ergonomics, driver safety, facilities safety, occupational health, auditing and inspection.

      Key Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Engages with site head(s) and department heads to align on priorities for integrating Environment Health Safety & Sustainability (EHSS) into the business
      • Manages the EHSS team and contributes to EHSS strategic planning; partners with Real Estate and Operations/Facilities leaders to execute EHSS business strategy
      • Collaborates with Legal on high level environmental, health, safety issues.
      • Manages relationships and contracts with vendors and consultants who support EHSS.
      • Leads external/internal audits and inspections as well as internal/external meetings, including project meetings, cross-functional meetings and external regulatory bodies.
      • Develops EHSS budgets and plans.
      • Leads regional and Global EHSS programs and collaborations across sites.
      • As a people manager within the organization, may have financial accountabilities and human resource responsibilities for assigned staff.
      • Formulate and implement a manufacturing EHSS manufacturing management system with appropriate program elements

      Knowledge and Skills:

      • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state and local environmental, health and safety regulations
      • Comprehensive knowledge in hazards and prevention of applicable chemical, biological, physical agents in order to manage direct reports
      • Experience in Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology industry
      • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to influence others internally and externally
      • Strong management skills with a collaborative approach to problem solving, driving performance and success in a global environment
      • Ability to solve unusual complex problems
      • Demonstrates leadership with health, safety and environmental issues
      • Environmental or Sustainability qualification is desirable (e.g. IEMA certificate, NEBOSH, CIH, CSP, GradIOSH or CMIOSH preferred)

      Education and Experience:

      • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, science or safety related field.
      • Master's degree in an applicable field (e.g. industrial hygiene)
      • Typically requires 10 years of experience with 3 years of supervisory/management experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
      • Experience working in manufacturing environments
      • Experience in assignment of process safety, manufacturing, NFPA code, OSHA programs, EPA programs, EHSS management systems
