Directly manage SELF’s health conditions team (currently an Associate Director and a Senior Writer)
Work closely with the Executive Editor and the Editor-in-Chief to implement brand growth and commercial revenue strategies, with an emphasis on producing content that is expertly reported, shareable, engaging, and inclusive.
Develop and manage a strategic editorial calendar for SELF’s sponsored editorial health conditions content - assign, top-edit, and publish at least 10+ pieces of health conditions content per week.
Directly oversee all sponsored health content, working closely with direct reports and the marketing/sales team to deliver campaign needs.
Rigorously fact-check and top-edit all health conditions content before it is published on SELF.
Personally assign and edit articles, working with a diverse group of freelance writers as needed. You’ll directly manage a content production budget.
Work closely with the video team to assist in conceptualizing, script-writing, and fact-checking SELF health videos and sponsored editorial videos.
Brainstorm, pitch, and project manage new packages, initiatives, and formats for health conditions content.
Represent SELF at sponsored or branded events as needed.
Track engagement and analytics, and work with the editors in your section to help them hone their strategies. If something isn’t working, you’ll try something new.
At least 8 years of health editing experience with a focus on service journalism.
A thorough understanding of the health and wellness landscape, strong scientific literacy, and a deep understanding of health reporting best practices.
Experience working with a medical review board and implementing expert feedback, as well as knowledge of SEO best practices.
Deep understanding of commercial revenue needs and the RFP process.
Proven experience managing several editorial staffers, from top editing to one-on-one performance feedback.
An established pool of top-notch freelancers who can adeptly cover a variety of health conditions for a diverse consumer audience.
Impeccable editorial judgment and attention to detail - ability to write and edit clean copy and produce conversational, approachable stories that establish a clear point of view.
Proven track record managing digital editorial lineups of 10+ stories per week.
Ability to pitch endless story ideas that are timely, shareable, thought-provoking, and in line with SELF’s values.
A strong belief in inclusivity as it relates to identity, body size, and health.

We are seeking an experienced, thoughtful Health Conditions Director to oversee SELF’s health conditions hub, Conditionally. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in assigning and editing health conditions content, with proven experience leading/managing a team to brainstorm, assign, and edit sponsored editorial health conditions content, ensuring that it is engaging, medically accurate, and inclusive.
The ideal candidate will bring experience answering health-related RFPs and editing sponsored content, ensuring all commercially-driven content meets the same editorial standards as the rest of SELF’s coverage. They need a sharp sense of how to package all content—including evergreen health explainers and personal narratives—in a way that makes it relatable and worthy of conversation. This person should feel comfortable handling a high volume of stories at once, playing a key role in ensuring the brand meets its revenue goals.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $111,000 - $175,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
