- Shape technical strategy (e.g., build vs. buy decisions, modernization approach, technical road-mapping), create and report on objectives and key results, identify the staffing needs, and support the execution of agile squads on the roadmap
- Provide technical direction and leadership to our Canadian engineering teams with a focus on quality, system reliability, performance and user experience
- Bring the technical experience to understand how to solve engineering problems, the interpersonal skills to motivate the team, and coordination abilities to get the team working together.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of various cross business supporting sqauds including Back End, Front End, DevOps and QA. You’ll be the thought leader, implement best practices and improve current ways of working so that we can build faster and more cohesively as a unit.
- Drive strategic alignment and bold moves at the enterprise level on technical platform decisions
- Evaluate and identify appropriate technology stacks, platforms and vendors, including web application frameworks and cloud providers for solution development
- Identify and drive ‘cross-cutting’ backlog items with teams to enable features to be delivered
- Work with internal IT partners, Chapter Leads and other platform teams to provide direct day to day engineering and technology problem-solving, coaching, direction and guidance to teams
- Lead decision making process on technology decisions at Journey Level, such as Tactical/Technical debt solution vs. Scope decisions vs. building strategic MVP solution in order to meet business outcomes. Guide teams through complex technical challenges.
- Champion an agile mindset by guiding and coaching Agile techniques and the ways of working to help improve teams and software development processes and create a high-performing team culture.
- Provide guidance and insight to establish governance processes, direction and control to ensure objectives are achieved and risks are managed appropriately for product development. Identify and manage technical risks and trade-offs, and communicate these to stakeholders clearly and concisely
- Accountable for the planning and achieving Agile squad financials as well as staffing for the program teams/squads.
- Implement strong Release Management practices aligning to the Sun Life change management processes.
- • 5+ years’ experience in a Technical Leadership role
- • 10+ years of previous experience as a Software Engineer, ideally with knowledge of back end development and devops.
- Experience in senior engineering and technology roles working with product development teams, delivering and building digital products – while remaining hands-on
- A track record of onboarding, and developing engineering and product teams
- An expert in product development for web and mobile with hands on experience coding or code delivery
- An expert in Agile software development methodologies and processes
- Experience in DevSecOps, CI/CD and Agile release management
- A depth and breadth of understanding in the digital technology space
- A wide experience and understanding of architecture in terms of solution, data and integration
- Ability to make connections and identify integration points between the Advisor Journeys, IT and Business Platforms Enterprise-wide
- Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and practices • Deep understanding of system architecture and design principles
- Experience managing remote teams and working across varying time zones
- Strong people skills (EQ, social awareness) and experience with conflict resolution and employee relations.
- Experience scaling teams and hiring for various technical roles; Strong track record of retention.
- Ability to inspire people and teams, building momentum around a vision
- Proven leadership; ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to influence a diverse group of stakeholders – strong leadership skills
- Strong problem solver with ability to lead the team to push the solution
- Strong coaching skill set with considerable experience in coaching large teams with various profiles
- Ability to empower teams and encourage fierce collaboration
- Build team agility by assessing and anticipating knowledge/skill gaps and driving knowledge transfer and/or skill development.
- Coach and mentor staff to develop a highly motivated and engaged team of professionals.
- Support the talent hiring and retention for the Secure Web Platform.
- Contribute to the performance plans and objectives that recognizes talent and provides honest, direct employee feedback in a timely manner.

Job Description:
This role requires Canadian Enhanced Reliability Security clearance [a minimum of 5 years of consecutive residency in Canada].
The Technical Delivery Director is responsible for embedding a world class product development and engineering culture within a given organization. This role will work with Development, Architecture and Operations as well as the Journey and Platform teams to ensure we are delivering a best-in-class technology solution for our digital Clients.
The Technical Delivery Director will work closely together with the Journey Owner to ensure an integrated end-to-end view across people and technology for our XP Journey as well as other Data and Analytics initiatives. They will also “defend the faith” and work with stakeholders across the enterprise to ensure we are developing the right solutions. In parallel, this role will focus on building a high-performing team that will thrive in a fast-paced continuous delivery engineering environment.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
