      Position Summary

      This is a newly created role, reporting directly to the EVP, People and Culture and the VP & Chief Legal Officer. Working with both People and Culture and Legal Affairs, you will represent UHN in legal matters involving labour and employment matters, including but not limited to wrongful dismissal claims, union grievances and arbitrations, human rights complaints, matters pertaining to credentialed professionals, and workplace investigations, working closely with our People and Culture professionals to provide guidance and counsel to all business units regarding labour and employment matters. In addition the role will provide direct oversight of and provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team of internal investigators focused on investigating workplace concerns as well as a corporate law clerk in conjunction with the Director, Corporate Legal & Compliance. You will be a member of both the Legal Executive and People & Culture Executive teams.

      Duties

      • Providing legal advice related to all labour and employment matters affecting UHN
      • Providing legal advice related to all human rights complaints related to UHN staff
      • Overseeing all workplace investigations, including as appropriate those relating to physicians in conjunction with Medical Affairs
      • Managing and providing guidance and leadership to UHN’s internal investigators.
      • Ensuring the quality and thoroughness of investigations conducted by the Centre of Excellence for Investigations
      • Representing UHN at arbitrations
      • Drafting all court filings and documents and representing UHN in wrongful dismissal clams and for claims under the Employment Standards Act and other forms of employment legislation
      • Partnering with People Consultants to advise leaders on employment and labour related issues
      • Oversee external legal counsel retained on labour and employment matters
      • Providing employment related support on matters including contract drafting, negotiations, and working with other members of the Legal Affairs Team (Privacy, Compliance, Corporate, Research) on human resources issues and/or contractual provisions related to employment and labour considerations and risk
      • Managing legal budget and invoices related to labour and employment matters
