Job Summary:
The Director of Sterilization and Reprocessing is responsible for developing, planning, and implementation of key clinical quality, safety, and accreditation initiatives as defined by Surgical Leadership and regulatory agencies in collaboration with the Infection Prevention Department and Nursing Leadership; The Director’s major accountabilities include: planning, organizing, developing, coordinating and enforcing consistent safe practices throughout the service area wherever sterilization or reprocessing is performed.
Essential Responsibilities: (The primary job duties this position is responsible for achieving are listed in order of importance.)•The position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
•Monitors and enforces all state and regulatory requirements, such as but not limited to; Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Standard, Association of Perioperative Registered Nurse (AORN) Recommended Guidelines, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC), California Department of Health (CDPH), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC), and KP Program wide scope reprocessing guidelines.
•Ensures compliance with all sterilization and reprocessing policies and procedures and ensures consistency throughout the region for all departments and ASC practices, quality assurance programs, and infection control policies.
•Monitors all quality systems and performs and/or delegates necessary quality audits with all departments that sterilize instruments as well as HLD and scope reprocessing. Works closely with the Regional Program Manager of Sterilization and Reprocessing. Identifies quality variances, documents deficiencies and trends, develops reports from relevant data. Provides feedback to all department managers, including clinics, Instrument Process Center (IPC) and ASC’s and enforces compliance with all plans of correction.
•Attends and actively participates in the monthly Infection Control Department meetings.
•Ensures all SPD and reprocessing staff receive training programs as appropriate. Ensures SPD and department managers are routinely providing staff in-service on all new equipment/technology. Monitors SPD technician compliance with certification requirements in conjunction with the departments managers.
•Accountable for the facility and technical aspects of SPD, ensuring the maintenance of all sterilizing equipment has preventative maintenance contracts in place related to the age and use of the equipment.
•Works collaboratively with facilities to ensure all repairs are carried out, with the degree of urgency needed for the distinct types of washers, sterilizers, medivators and all equipment associated with sterilization and reprocessing. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are met with little or no delay in production.
•Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to SPD and department managers, ensuring effective teamwork and fosters effective integration of efforts with Kaiser Permanente initiatives.
•Provides oversight in conjunction with the SPD and department managers for all functions of SPD, such as but not limited to; decontamination, assembly sterilization, high level disinfection (HLD), reprocessing, storage, and transporting of instruments and endoscopes.
•Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Assists in resolution of grievances and other personnel problems with position responsibilities. Ensures all job descriptions are current and up-to-date, reflective of the work being done.
•Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
