      The University of Olivet invites applications for the position of Director of Campus Safety.

      The University is located in south central Michigan in the town of Olivet, MI, which is a close knit, rural community offering quiet streets and natural surroundings, yet is not more than 30 minutes from the larger cities of Lansing and Battle Creek. Both are small enough to be friendly and large enough to boast many of the big city amenities.

      POSITION SUMMARY

      The Director is responsible for creating and implementing policies and procedures to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Under the direction of the Dean of Student Life, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership for the University’s safety and security operations and emergency preparedness in close collaboration with local and county authorities. The Director is responsible for setting the vision, strategy, and direction of the University’s safety, security, and emergency preparedness programs, and provides technical guidance, training, and inspection/risk analysis services to staff and students to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local agency’s standards and regulations.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      The requirements listed below are representative of the education and experience required or preferred for an individual to perform the essential responsibilities satisfactorily:

      Education: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or certification related to areas of responsibility preferred.

      Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in safety, security or law enforcement required; at least two years experience in personnel management and supervision preferred.

      The director of campus safety must have a working knowledge of :

      1. Education programs appropriate for sustaining a safe and healthy university campus;
      2. Best practices related to restorative justice practices;
      3. Strategies to promote inclusion, equity, and belonging throughout a diverse campus;
      4. Campus policies and procedures;
      5. City, county, and state laws;
      6. Principles and practices of security supervision;
      7. Professional writing skills
      8. Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

      The director of campus safety must :

      1. Be able to execute assigned duties firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
      2. Be able to operate all equipment necessary in the performance of required duties.
      3. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public and employees;
      4. Have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
      5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
      6. Have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality; and,
      7. Demonstrate responsible, professional and reliable job performance.

      COMPENSATION: This is a full-time, 12-month, position with a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, and generous paid holiday and leave time. Tuition programs available.

      4. Compliance with all required external safety-related reporting;
      5. Positive and highly engaged relationships with local external law enforcement and safety agencies;
      6. A fair and just college judicial system that promotes restorative justice, including the conduct of investigations; and,
      7. Faculty, staff, and student constituencies that feel safe on the Olivet College campus.

      RESPONSIBILITIES

      The director of campus safety:

      1. Developing Safety Policies: Creating and updating safety policies and procedures for the university. These policies may cover areas such as emergency response, crime prevention, fire safety, and more.
      2. Emergency Preparedness: Ensuring that the campus is prepared for emergencies such as natural disasters, fires, and security threats. This includes developing and conducting drills and training programs for staff and students.
      3. Educational Programming: Develop and implement regular education program to promote and foster a safe and healthy campus community, embodying The University’s Campus Compact and restorative justice practices.
      4. Security Personnel Management: Overseeing the hiring, training, and management of campus safety staff. Supervises campus safety staff, including full- and part-time officers, student workers and student interns
      5. Security Technology: Implementing and managing security technology systems such as surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems to monitor and secure the campus.
      6. Security Planning: Developing and implementing security plans, policies, and procedures to safeguard the campus community. Ensures appropriate and effective training for officers and campus community is completed.
      7. Community Engagement: Building positive relationships with the campus community and fostering a sense of trust and safety. Engaging with the university community, including students, faculty, staff, and parents, to address safety concerns and gather input on safety initiatives. Works in collaboration with the director of the criminal justice (CJ) program and members of the CJ faculty to provide and supervise internship and employment opportunities for students
      8. Crime Prevention & Campus Management: Developing and implementing crime prevention strategies, including community outreach and educational programs to promote safety awareness. Ensures the enforcement of campus parking, building security, and the patrolling of the campus grounds
      9. Crisis Management: Leading crisis management teams and coordinating responses during major incidents or emergencies. Developing and implementing crisis management plans for various scenarios, including active shooter situations, public health emergencies, and more.
      10. Investigations: Ensures the investigation of all complaints of criminal and non-criminal actions on all properties owned by Olivet College by conducting or overseeing investigations of security incidents, crimes, or violations of campus policies.
      11. Collaboration: Interfaces effectively with local police agencies and fire and rescue organizations to promote readiness for coordinated response and cooperation Also, works collaboratively and strategically with the dean of student life, provost, and president to provide responsive campus leadership in the area of campus safety. Participate in campus committees and working groups as requested by the dean of student engagement, provost or president
      12. Budget Management: Managing the budget for the campus safety department, which includes allocating resources for personnel, equipment, and programs.
      13. Reporting: Providing regular reports to university administration on the state of campus safety and security, including any incidents or trends that need attention.
      14. Risk Assessment: Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities on campus and develop mitigation strategies.
      15. Compliance: Ensuring that the university complies with relevant laws and regulations related to campus safety and security. Oversees and collaborates with the campus Title IX (TIX) coordinator regarding TIX cases and processes. Oversees data collection and ensures reporting of campus safety-related data, including reports required by the Cleary and VAWA Acts, Fire and Safety Reports, and others
