      Description

      The Director of Communications and Content leads and oversees communications and creative production efforts for MASS MoCA. They will define and design an architecture for MASS MoCA’s communications and content that consistently reflects MASS MoCA’s public voice; raises the institution’s visibility among diverse audiences, and positions MASS MoCA as a thought leader in the arts and cultural fields.


      This senior leadership role oversees the teams and cross-departmental efforts that coordinate all communications to the wide variety of MASS MoCA’s constituents including media, artists, staff, and the general public. This position has accountability for the quality, tone and execution of creative requests, ensuring consistent and accessible branding and design standards throughout all communications, including web, social media, print, video, and any other future technologies or channels.


      In collaboration with senior leadership, this role will identify opportunities and develop storytelling and marketing efforts at the institutional level and support MASS MoCA’s program, visitor experience, and earned and contributed income objectives. They will lead a creative, collaborative approach to reaching MASS MoCA’s audiences and constituents. They ensure the development and communication of innovative and compelling stories that illuminate MASS MoCA’s dynamic multi-platform programming, its position as a champion of experimental and innovative ideas, and the value of contemporary art and culture. And they will actively build connections across the institution and open communication so all departments and staff members within the institution are aligned and working together to strengthen MASS MoCA’s brand and voice.


      This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, with availability on weekends and holidays, and for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours as needed.


      Responsibilities:

      • Create alignment across all stakeholder groups around MASS MoCA’s mission and vision, from macro to micro
      • Oversee and align operations of communications and development teams, identify strategic development objectives and focus the organization on executing short- and long-term initiatives that support those objectives
      • Implement external engagement program, building an understanding among external stakeholder groups including members, trustees, donors and community partners, of MASS MoCA’s mission and key messages
      • Provide executive leadership for vision-setting, planning, goal-setting, and decision-making associated with partnerships, development, and external communications in service of MASS MoCA’s mission
      • Establish cross-departmental pathways that support positive organizational culture
      • Collaborate with other Leadership Team members to set and drive toward institutional vision, priorities, goals, and benchmarks

      Requirements

      The ideal candidate for this role will be in a sitting Director of Marketing, Director of Communications and/or equivalent role, with a minimum of 7-10 years of hands-on experience and progressive leadership in creating communications and marketing campaigns, including developing and managing budgets. The Director of Communications and Content will ideally be a thoughtful storyteller, who is results-oriented and can adapt to changing and competing priorities. The right candidate is a thoughtful leader with impeccable judgment and listening skills, an effective collaborator throughout the organization regardless of perceived seniority, and someone who excels in inspiring and enabling others to do their very best work. The ideal candidate has experience managing work across teams with a high degree of emotional intelligence; a leadership style that is driven by active inquiry and learning; an ability to creatively synthesize ideas and input from multiple sources; and a commitment to excellence.

      Preferred Skills:

      • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferred.
      • Experience in the design and execution of effective creative communication strategies that utilize a wide range of digital media platforms.
      • Exceptional interpersonal and writing skills, including a personal presence that is effective and inspirational across a variety of settings and stakeholders.
      • Vision, expertise, and leadership advancing complex development and strategic communication practices and tools that hold MASS MoCA’s mission and values at the center.
      • Experience in measurement, learning, and evaluation of marketing communications plans in motion.
      • A deep personal and professional commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion.
      • Proven ability to lead thoughtfully and intentionally, gathering input, acting on feedback, making appropriate yet at times difficult decisions, and demonstrating sound professional judgment, maturity, and self-awareness.
      • Fluency in writing a variety of communications content including essays, speeches, message guidance, and briefing memos.
      • Ability to create conditions across multiple stakeholder groups—including artists, studios, creative producers, philanthropists, curators and field-wide practitioners—for authentic engagement and to develop unique opportunities for MASS MoCA’s creative culture.
      • Must be able to wear PPE when necessary.
