- BA/BS degree and 7 years' experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
- Experience negotiating.
- Experience in all aspects of forestry including timber harvest, site preparation, reforestation, pre-commercial thinning, insect and disease management and coordinating multiple use management regimes.
- Experience with all aspects of timber procurement (stand assessment, volume calculations, timber sale prospectus generation, bid advertisement, contractor selection, contractor management and quality control).
- Prescribed Fire experience with work towards National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Qualifications preferred.
- Experience in securing public and private funds through grant writing to meet program needs preferred.

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Director of Forest Programs (DFP) provides strategic vision, direction and oversight for The Nature Conservancy's forest management and restoration programs and collaborative forestry and fire related partnerships in Alabama. The DFP leads some or all aspects of conservation science, ecological restoration, including timber management and prescribed fire prioritization, ecological monitoring, and community relations for TNC's terrestrial priorities in Alabama and assists in Longleaf Pine Whole System efforts and other initiatives as assigned. The DFP may also serves as a key contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations, and the academic community regarding forest management work state-wide. This position may participate in prescribed fire activities. The DFP may oversee some aspects of managing and establishing forest carbon projects.
The Director of Forest Programs establishes the Conservancy as a major leader in forest restoration efforts in Alabama, defines conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies, builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. This position will develop innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs, engages local community support for local conservation efforts, and negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve, restore and protect natural communities. This position will be responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs. The DFP will need to be a registered forester in the State of AL or can achieve within 6-12 months.
