- Lead and manage large/critical complex IT areas/teams within own department.
- Propose innovative & differentiating IT capabilities within own technology/process area to business teams and oversee implementation and adoption.
- Define operational plan and oversee development and execution in line with IT objectives.
- Manage scope, schedule, and resources to ensure work is delivered in accordance with business needs and established quality standards while eliminating risks.
- Collaborate with key leaders in internal functions and partner/vendor organizations to optimize organizational outcomes.
- Lead systems for governance, monitoring, review, and control of processes and functions performed by the department.
- Provide input into overall budget and variance management for departmental initiatives.
- Actively drive processes for team management in terms of goalsetting, performance, development, and engagement.
- Assists Vice President of Research Informatics in (i) assessing institution’s needs and (ii) developing strategic architecture and expansion roadmaps for lab IT infrastructure and computing/data processing systems.
- Directing and leading the Laboratory Information Technology (LIT) team and other IS teams, as well as hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating them.
- Providing leadership, guidance, and support to the LIT and other IS staff fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinating and collaborating with faculty, PIs, lab staff, management, vendors, and other IS teams and stakeholders to meet labs’ IT and computing needs, as well as to develop and drive a services/support strategy to meet those needs.
- Coordinating and collaborating with other IS leaders and service line groups, such as Technology Services, Client Services, and Information Security Services to ensure that the Linux and Windows systems are aligned and integrated with the organization’s IT strategies, objectives, and standards.
- Planning and managing LIT budget and resources for lab IT infrastructure including computing and data processing systems and networks, as well as negotiating and overseeing contracts and agreements with vendors and service providers.
- Directing and leading the development of architecture for lab IT infrastructure including computing/data processing systems and networks.
- Directing and leading the design, installation, configuration, testing, administration, and maintenance of lab IT systems (e.g., network connectivity, Linux/Windows OS based workstations and servers, storage, databases, scientific software, hardware peripheral devices, etc.).
- Directing and leading the troubleshooting and resolving of any technical issues or problems that arise within lab IT systems, as well as providing technical support and guidance to the lab staff and users.
- Ensuring the reliability and performance of lab IT systems, as well as compliance with relevant standards and privacy laws (e.g., GLP, GMP, HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).
- Directing and leading the analysis of network connectivity and IT systems performance to determine and correct inefficiencies and problems.
- Directing and leading the implementation of security measures to protect Lab IT systems from cyberattacks and unauthorized system access, including firewalls, intrusion detection, antivirus scanning, multi-factor access controls, remote access, etc.
- Directing and leading the implementation of updates, upgrades, and migration of lab IT systems, as well as testing and evaluating new technologies and solutions.
- Directing and leading the development and implementation of policies, procedures, technical documentation, user manuals, and best practices for lab IT systems, as well as training and educating the lab staff and users on how to use the lab computing/data processing systems effectively and efficiently.
- Providing innovation and leadership in the selection, implementation, and use of tools and best practices.
- Directing and leading the monitoring and analysis of the customer service performance metrics, such as customer satisfaction, retention, loyalty, feedback, and complaints.
- Identifying and resolving customer service issues and escalations, as well as implementing preventive and corrective actions.
- Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with customers, vendors, partners, and stakeholders.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in business administration, computer science, data science, information science, or related field.
- Master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum Experience: 10+ years of experience in an IT functional area including experience managing mid-large teams with focus on both achievement of objectives as well as critical skill-building.
- Experience having led large-scale projects/processes through to implementation.
- Experience with operational management, budget planning & vendors, and resource management.
- IT experience in life science research or healthcare research field is desirable.
- Prior experience in building external connections with peers, emerging technology communities, and vendor networks.
- Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.
- Progressive years of experience in design, implementation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure and/or computing systems.
- Some experience working relevant governance and regulatory compliance requirements.
- PMP, ITIL, ITSM, CISA, CISSP, CCDE, CCNP, CISM, or Linux / Windows related certification preferred.
- Advanced knowledge and skills in networking, computing, and data storage / processing systems.
- Advanced understanding and familiarity with Linux and Windows-based computer systems.
- Strong leadership, communications, and technical skills including IT business acumen.
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff and users, as well as external partners and stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to share technical results and recommendations with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to perform systems capacity planning, updates, and migration of hardware and software to enhance computing capabilities and performance.
- Knowledge of current and emerging IT technologies and best practices, especially those related to lab computer and data processing systems.
- Ability to analyze data and make data-driven decisions.
- Ability to plan, design, implement, and maintain complex and dynamic IT systems and solutions.
St. Jude is looking for a Director of Laboratory Information Technology who is responsible for information technology (IT) and computing system infrastructure required for onboarding and operation of high-end laboratory instruments used in the discovery and translation of biomedical knowledge into therapeutic treatments and cures for life-threatening pediatric diseases such as cancers.
The Director of Laboratory Information Technology plans, directs, and oversees the design, installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of IT infrastructure including computer systems, data processing pipelines, and network connectivity to support onboarding and operation of laboratory instruments and computer systems for faculty, principal investigators, departmental technology centers, centers of excellence, and institutional shared resources at the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
St. Jude’s scientific computing environment is comprised of a large-scale HPC Cluster, DGX Artificial Intelligence Computing platform, large-scale research data storage systems, backup and archival systems, computational servers, virtual machines (VMs), cloud computing resources, high-bandwidth campus fiber networks, and InfiniBand, which support ultra-low latency, high data throughput, and high-performance scientific computing environment for St. Jude’s discovery and translational research.

This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
