      The Director of Privacy & Compliance for Research plans and directs VCU Health’s efforts for compliance with federal and state requirements, and organizational policies, across research activities at VCU Health or with VCU Health data. The Director provides leadership and strategic direction for research activities related to patient privacy regulations and compliance with third-party payor requirements. The Director will serve as the VCU Health Privacy Board Chair, liaison and coordinate with VCU departments for research activities, including the Honest Broker Program.

      The Director of Privacy & Compliance for Research works with VCU and VCU Health senior leaders and directors to establish processes that optimize research activities within regulatory requirements.

      Essential Job Statements

      • Develop and implement privacy and compliance initiatives to support research activities in alignment with federal and state requirements. Including, but not limited to education, policies, and auditing and monitoring.

      • Serve as the content expert on protected health information and third-party payor compliance as related to research activities. Maintain and communicate current knowledge of applicable federal and state privacy laws; monitor advancements in the field to ensure organizational adaptation and compliance.

      • Chair the VCU Health Privacy Board.

      • Coordinate the Honest Broker Program with VCU and VCU Health team members.

      • Facilitate successful interactions with VCUHS Office of Clinical Research, Enterprise Analytics, Information Security, Information Technology, VCU Office of Vice President for Research, VCU Institutional Review Board (IRB), VCU Informatics, VCU School of Medicine Operations, and other departments, as applicable, within VCU/VCUHS.

      • Assist VCU Health Compliance and Privacy teams with relevant investigations.

      • Implement proactive, strategic, and detail-oriented approaches with a strong commitment to quality and diplomacy.

      • Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS. Accepts alternate assignments, as required to fulfill business needs.

      Employment Qualifications

      Required Education:

      Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Clinical Research, or Public Policy or Law or closely related field from an accredited program.

      Preferred Education:
      Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Clinical Research, Public Policy or Law or closely related field from an accredited program.

      Licensure/Certification Required:

      CHPC from HCCA (Health Care Compliance Association®), or acquire in first year or CHPS from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association®) or acquire in first year

      Licensure/Certification Preferred:

      CITI-certified; CHRC (Certified in Healthcare Research Compliance) certification or acquire in first year

      Minimum Qualifications

      Years and Type of Required Experience

      7 (seven) years of experience in research and/or healthcare privacy with 3 (three) of those years in an academic healthcare setting.
