- Identify and assess potential risks associated with patient care, clinical operations, and hospital policies
- Oversee the reporting and investigation of adverse events, incidents, and near misses
- Serve as the coordinator for New York Patient Occurrence Reporting Tracking System (NYPORTS) and ensure timely submission of reportable incidents and conductions RCAs for those reportable cases as applicable
- Collaborate with patient relations and quality departments to investigate and respond to complaints and grievances
- Investigate incidents that could have adverse consequences for the hospital, including reading and digesting an electronic medical record, interviewing clinical and other staff, and writing literate and complete case reviews and reports, and ensure follow up actions to prevent recurrences
- Conduct root cause analysis for high risk cases and follow up corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Work with the Legal Counsel Office to provide advice and assistance to health care professionals on subjects ranging from end-of-life decision-making to safe discharge, to adverse events
- Work with the Legal Counsel Office to manage hospital’s insurance policies, including malpractice and general liabilities
- Work with the Legal Counsel Office to handle claims
- Coordinate responses to the Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC)
- Collaborate with the AVP of Regulatory and the Legal Counsel Office to ensure compliance with laws and regulations related to risk management and accreditation standards
- Provide training and education to staff regarding risk management principles and practices
- Conduct workshops, seminars, and orientation programs about risk management for new employees
- Provide direct supervision of administrative and professional staff in the department of Risk Management
- Participate in and reporting to hospital-wide committees involving performance improvement, Peer Review, patient safety and risk management and other committees as needed and instructed by the CQO
- Track and trend data from incident reporting system and RCAs to identify areas for risk such as medical errors, patient complaints and legal issues
- Maintain comprehensive records and databases of risk management activities, incidents, RCAs and outcomes
- Promote culture od safety and continuous improvement to prevent patient harm
- Collaborate with quality and patient safety departments and other healthcare teams to implement patient safety protocols and initiatives
- Be an active member in the hospital High Reliability Organization Journey
- Other duties as needed and instructed by the CQO and other Senior Leadership team
- Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in healthcare risk management, preferably in a hospital setting or a combination of quality and risk
- Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and patient safety principles
- Excellent communication, writing, leadership, and organizational skills
- Masters of Science Degree in Nursing or a health-related discipline
- New York State Registered Nurse Licensure
- 5+ years of related leadership experience within a hospital setting
- Certification in risk management (e.g., CPHRM, CPPS, CPHQ)

Job Summary:
The Department of Risk Management at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Director of Risk Management/TH Associate Administrator.
The Director of Risk Management reports to the Chief Quality Officer and has responsibility for the hospital’s clinical risk management program, including oversight of medical malpractice cases against the hospital and New York State employees, identifying potential risks and developing strategies to mitigate them.
The Director must have deep clinical experience that will facilitate their insightful case reviews, that will help identify issues that may affect legal defensibility and those that indicate an opportunity for improvement of care. The position also provides an immediate, first-line consultation to clinical staff on subjects ranging from informed consent and surrogate decision-making to the management of adverse events and patient complaints.
