      Job Title: Director of School Counseling Exemption Status: Exempt Reports to: Chief of Schools Pay Grade: Professional 6 Dept/School: Administration Date Revised: 01/2024 Primary Purpose Oversee the development and implementation of a balanced, comprehensive, and developmental counseling program that is consistent with district goals and objectives and include guidance curriculum and responsive services for students. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Masters Degree (or higher) in Guidance Counseling Valid Counseling Certification Valid Teacher Certification Experience supervising a team Special Knowledge/Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills Knowledge and experience in counseling techniques Ability to work with other professional in collaborative roles Ability to effectively consult with parents, teachers, administrators and community members working with students Ability to present information in one-on one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents and district staff. Effectively use student scheduling software and other technology as required by the District. Experience: Three years school counseling experience Major Responsibilities and Duties: Use a planning process to define needs, priorities and program objectives aligned with the District strategic plan. Implement a comprehensive and balanced counseling program. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, selection, and training of guidance and counseling personnel and making recommendations about placement, assignment, discipline and dismissal. Assist campus administrators in hiring and evaluating school counselors and student advocates. Develop and administer counseling department budget based on documented needs and ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed efficiently. Develop and deliver training to counseling staff that supports professional growth and ethics, and a consistent interpretation of district policies and state laws and regulation. Serve as a liaison between counseling staff and elementary and secondary education departments. Research, recommend, implement and administer District and department policies and procedures that are in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Present relevant information accurately and without bias. College and Career Management: Plan and implement a plan for FASFA/TASFA/Financial Aid activities and provide support to families though the college application process. Develop and implement a plan for the development of four-year plans and personal graduation plans for students as appropriate. Lead participation in the area, regional and state job fairs and college nights. Manage and support any college and College Fair field trips. Collect and manage data dealing with College and Career Readiness activities on campuses, including their effectiveness and review for effectiveness. Academic Monitor the District’s curriculum and goals for academic counseling, provide district wide staff development for counselors and campus sites as needed, lead the program assessment process for the district counseling department. Provide support and guidance to counselors in an effort to ensure accuracy of student transcripts. Work with high school counselors to develop a post-secondary plan to ensure graduates are college,career, military or work ready. Provide leadership to ensure student academic histories are accurate. Manage and monitor the Comprehensive Guidance and measurable goals for each campus. Provide guidance to administrators and counselors regarding the teachers areas of responsibility in teaching the developmental guidance curriculum. Provide leadership to campus counselors in personalized educational and career awareness. Provide a systematic process for course selection input in an effort to ensure accuracy of student schedules. Provide continuous input on the course selection guide and update assigned courses to reflect the most current and accurate information. Community Coordination/Collaboration/Outreach Provide leadership, management, and vision regarding counseling and support services for students and families to personnel district-wide including teachers, principals, support personnel, central administration and appropriate committees. Ensure the enforcement of federal and state laws, local Board of Trustees policies, administrative regulations and counseling personnel qualifications and certifications. Promote communication with parents and others in the community concerning the mission of the district as well as services provided in the district; provide outreach into the community to build an effective relationship between the district and the community at-large. Develop an emergency plan and coordinate the activation and assignment of crisis counselors and response teams as needed. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and community resources, including an up-to-date community referral list. Seek out opportunities for community and agency support. Coordinate school, home and community resources to engage students, parents, and others to be referred to special programs and services as needed. Mental Health/Social Emotional Learning Participate in the development of an effective referral process for assisting students and others to use community agencies and services. Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment and records, including referrals for mental health. Ensure that the uses of student records are for the benefit of students and personnel working with those students. Manage character education programs and effectiveness on each campus. Provide professional development, manage and train staff and counselors on Child Reporting and Suicide Prevention and other mandatory legal requirements. Manage communication tools for Safety and Mental Health. Provide opportunities for counselor professional development. Organization Morale: Seek ways to promote and advocate for Guidance and Counseling Programs. Foster collegiality and team building among department employees; encourage active involvement in the decision-making process by all department employees; communicate expectations for high-level performance to staff; recognize staff achievements; and ensure effective and quick resolution of conflicts among department employees. Facilitate communication and collaboration among assigned department personnel and campus administrators to enhance service delivery, program development, and customer satisfaction. Other Responsibilities: Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise and evaluate the work of the counseling department administrative assistant.
