Job Description

- The workday will be an eight (8) hour day.
- The Director of School Safety will not be required to attend all extracurricular activities which are held beyond his/her regular workday, but may be required to attend, or respond to, those activities in which student or staff safety is a concern.
- A certification from an advanced training in school resource officer setting.
- A certification in first aid, AED, CPR, and Narcan administration.
- A clear drug and criminal background check.
- A patient attitude and even temper.
- The ability to lead and direct others under their direct supervision.
- Developing, implementing, and overseeing an effective school division safety plan to include preparation, prevention, response and recovery.
- Ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal laws related to school safety.
- Responding to school district emergencies and working in direct partnership with Law Enforcement and First Responders.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with West Virginia and Berkeley County Emergency Management and Homeland Security to assist in the implementation of crisis and emergency response plans.
- Designing and directing the training and advocacy of county-wide safety and security to all school division personnel, parents, and community groups.
- Collaborating on the evaluation and effectiveness of district safety and emergency management plans and policies and making recommendations to district leadership, Superintendent and School board.
- Working closely with all BCS departments, schools and locations to coordinate the assignment of all security personnel and installation and maintenance of safety equipment to include cameras, metal detectors etc.
- Supervising BCS School Safety Officers and School Resource Officers.
- Attending meetings, conferences and workshops related to school safety to stay abreast of updates and new information.
- Preparing and presenting oral reports, presentations and training to individual school personnel and community groups relative to school safety.
- Keeping the BCS leadership, Superintendent and School Board abreast on district-wide matters related to safety and security.
- Acting as a critical component of investigations and after-action reviews, as directed by BCS leadership, Superintendent or the School Board.
- Certifying BCS compliance with all WVDE and Capitol Police audits, surveys, and mandates.
- Serving on committees, task forces and special projects as needed and assigned.
- Organizing on-going training for the safety officers in order to maintain necessary certifications.
- Scheduling coverage by safety officers for school events that fall outside of normal work hours.
- Coordinating with central office staff, school administration, and safety officers during crisis events.
- Performing related work, as required.

Salary: In accordance with Berkeley County Schools Teacher with experience and education level along with Director’s Index.
Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Superintendent and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310.
Qualifications: A certified or qualified retired law enforcement officer who meets all the requirements to carry a firearm as a qualified retired law enforcement officer under the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act of 2004, as amended, pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 926C(c), carries that firearm in a concealed manner, and has on their person official identification in accordance with the act; preferred qualifications also include:
Position Overview: The Director of School Safety will maintain a safe and secure environment for students, employees and visitors by helping to develop, establish and enforce safety and security policies, access control procedures, fire, safety, emergency management, asset protection, parking control and traffic enforcement programs. The Director of School Safety will perform tasks in developing, implementing, and managing programs designed to effectively address security and school safety needs. The employee is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive school safety program, which includes working with local law enforcement agencies and supervising School Resource Officers and School Safety Officers. The employee will work extensively with district leadershipt, school administrators and the BCS community on all areas of school safety. Work also involves implementing training programs pertaining to matters of safety and security for employees and students.
