- Directs, manages, and provides oversight for special needs students in accordance with the district’s vision, mission and goals.
- Develops and coordinates curricula for special education programs that align with general curriculum and evaluates effectiveness.
- Works with union personnel and administers local labor contracts.
- Directs, manages, and provides oversight for special needs students in accordance with the district’s vision, mission and goals.

- Directs and coordinates the budgeting and evaluation of special needs programs and services and recommend changes as required.
- Provides leadership and supervision in the management of special education services including preschool programs speech and hearing services, learning disabilities programs, programs for the physically handicapped and programs for the visually and hearing impaired.
- Coordinates applications for state and federal grant assistance and other sources of financial support.
- Consults with building Principals and administration on improving instructional services.
- Establishes procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment and re-evaluation of students with disabilities as determined by the state.
- Coordinates home instruction for homebound or hospitalized students.
- Keeps abreast of the legal requirements governing special education and informs staff of upcoming changes.
- Maintains records for all students receiving special education program services.
- Makes recommendations regarding design, equipment, furniture or facility usage for special needs programming.
- Consults with parents of enrolled students regarding delivery of services and recommendations for improvement. Takes corrective action when necessary.
- Follows best practices in the industry and administers district policies and procedures.
- Provides staff development opportunities that incorporate the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from the teachers.
- Performs special assignments as directed by the Superintendent.

Job Description: The Director of Special Education implements programs and services for identified special needs/disabled students to ensure conformance to local, state and federal objectives. Ensures objectives of programs and services are met and best practices are evaluated and implemented thought the District.
