The Facilities Services & Planning (“FS&P”) division plays a key role in helping Stanford Health Care accomplish this mission. With a fast-paced, tech-savvy and lean culture that focuses on goals, metrics and continuous improvement, FS&P provides non-clinical operational support to Stanford Health Care and other Stanford Medicine entities to ensure safe and successful non-clinical operations 24/7 and plan for the organization’s future facility needs.

      The Business Operations & Strategic Initiatives department (“BOSI”) provides centralized and standardized business management services, which includes strategic planning, financial performance management, resource utilization, contract administration, operational metrics, lease administration, and process improvement initiatives to all departments within FS&P. This includes Hospitality, Facilities Infrastructure & Safety, Site Support Services, Security, Transportation & Grounds, Space Management, Hospital & clinic Activations, and Sustainability Program Office. The FS&P division is comprised of over 2,000 staff members across 40 cost centers with a total budget of over $350 million.

      The Director of Operational Excellence reports to the Executive Director – Business Operations Strategic Initiatives. The Operational Excellence team leads operational projects, support financial functions, creates standard operating procedures, and provides administrative support. The Director of Operational Excellence is responsible for creating, implementing, and maintaining quality control indicators, as well as, adjusting operations as necessary to improve customer satisfaction and operational excellence. This is a hybrid position at Stanford Health Care, requiring travel to Stanford Medicine locations. This position provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. The Director manages the budget, department contracts, and purchase orders. This person should be capable of resolving escalated issues that arise and managing department-wide operational projects that require coordination with neighboring departments. This candidate will oversee the development and implementation of quality indicators, metrics, and dashboards to measure outcomes.

      A Brief Overview
      The Director of Operational Excellence has broad oversight for all departmental programs within a business unit including identification, development, progress tracking and outcome reporting. In addition to any newly identified programs, standard required programs are: Quality and Compliance, Employee Engagement, Recruitment and Onboarding, employee specific needs such as CiCare, Workplace Safety, Patient Experience, Contract Management and New Software Implementation. Efficiency of operations across all departments will be demonstrated. With strong focus in leadership, strategy execution and innovation, this critical member of the business unit leadership team serves as a key advisor to the Executive Director/Administrative Director to ensure the integrity of the business unit services while meeting the business objectives of the organization.

      What you will do

      • Sets vision for and leads department priorities.
      • Partners with Executive Director/Administrative Director in short and long range planning activities that align with the SHC operational plan, incorporate innovation and new technologies and promote the individual needs of each business unit.
      • Acts in an advisory role to all departments, programs, staff and leaders.
      • Maintains a Master Program Schedule (FACI) and regularly reports on progress to all Senior leaders.
      • Develops an Annual Report.
      • Leads recruiting, onboarding and hosting of events ensuring adequate staffing levels to support daily operations.
      • Leads Quality and Compliance programs ensuring safe, best in class care for patients, staff and visitors as applicable.
      • Oversees contract administration needs including initiation, vendor performance and financial oversight.
      • Partners with Business Operations and Strategic Initiatives (“BOSI”) & leadership to prepare budgets, monitor FTE variances, track financial outcomes and make recommendations.
      • Implements, oversees and continuously improves systems, processes and standard work to drive the successful management of operations.
      • Facilitates effective communication across the enterprise. Builds, develops and grows business relationships with stakeholders and vendors.
      • Supports professional growth of direct reports through identification of learning needs, designing developmental plans, and facilitating learning opportunities.
      • Coaches, mentors, and motivates direct reports in order to meet business unit program goals.


      Education Qualifications

      • Job requires a Bachelor’s degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. Relevant experience in lieu of degree may be considered. Relevant experience in lieu of degree is in addition to the experience requirements for this position. Required

      • Six+ (6+) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience Required


      Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Basic knowledge of project management methodologies to lead project teams; write in a clear and understandable manner.
      • Understands extremely complex verbal or written instructions.
      • Must be well organized and systematic in work processes, possess excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities while managing aggressive deadlines.
      • Ability to delegate assignments and share decision-making with team members as appropriate.
      • Must have strong leadership skills and be able to lead project teams, exercising strong interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
      • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate efficient and cost-effective methods for construction, repair and/or maintenance projects as applicable
      • Ability to establish the strategic direction and business plans for a functional group
      • Ability to manage complex projects and resources (people, costs, time)
      • Ability to plan, organize and manage building operational services; develop, implement and evaluate a variety of building and operation systems and preventative maintenance programs
      • Ability to research regulations, procedures or technical reference materials relating to building maintenance
      • Ability to strategize, plan and implement change
      • Ability to work effectively both as a team player and leader
      • Knowledge of business practices to prepare bid specification, negotiate agreements and administer contracts
      • Knowledge of materials methods and principles used in the maintenance of hospital, clinic and office building installations and systems
      • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management
      • Knowledge of project management processes and systems

      Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $74.66 - $98.94 per hour

      The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
