      A Lot About You

      We are seeking a news-obsessed, results-driven director to build and manage an editorial optimization team at Yahoo News. This role requires close partnership with cross-functional teams including Search, Originals, Curation, Analytics, Product and Platforms to put Yahoo in the best position to lead search. The group you oversee will help shape content experiences consumed by tens of millions of users daily. As such, this role requires a seasoned journalist and strategic leader with demonstrated experience in news SEO. In a rapidly evolving ecosystem, we need someone committed to delivering a best-in-class experience and understanding the latest, most effective search tactics for optimizing Yahoo’s original news content. This person will be an evangelist for SEO best practices and an advocate for users and our journalists, informing our products, workflows and systems. The role requires a data-driven audience leader with creative ideas to grow our top of funnel; they will help drive the team to meet various quarterly goals. It’s critical that anyone who applies thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

      The optimization team will be responsible for identifying the highest-opportunity search targets for our originals and curation teams, elevating smart coverage ideas and planning for news events. They will work closely with teams across the News group to make informed decisions about what to update, and where to improve/expand coverage on trending topics to increase on-site engagement. They will optimize articles in real-time to strengthen our user experience and search ranking. The team will help deepen our user experience through recirculation efforts that connect people to content that informs and empowers them. They will also be responsible for facilitating SEO training, and coaching on headline best practices alongside the copy desk and curation team, as well as delivering actionable insights from past performances.

      Responsibilities :

      • Create and implement strategies to reach and retain new audiences through search platforms, including distinct tactics for live, trending and evergreen content

      • Partner with the core Search team to identify the highest-opportunity trending keywords and topics, and work with Originals and Curation to deliver on them

      • Assist the Yahoo Originals team in assigning stories based on trending topics and live events

      • Act as newsroom expert on best practices for search optimization, headlines and recirculation

      • Partner with newsroom leaders to create optimization systems and workflows

      • Closely track metrics to stay on top of of evolving interests across our ecosystem

      • Analyze content search performance to provide retrospectives and actionable insights

      • Help execute coverage plans for tentpole events across a variety of content categories

      • Work with editors prior to publication of priority stories to apply search and recirculation guidance

      Qualifications:

      • At least 7 years of experience in newsrooms with past experience managing people and projects

      • At least 5 years of experience managing SEO strategy in a high-traffic news environment; global experience is a plus

      • Deep understanding of news SEO best practices and optimization tactics

      • Demonstrated ability to assign and deliver quick turnaround trending content

      • Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities with accuracy and attention to detail

      • Familiarity and experience with content management and publishing systems, information architecture and metrics dashboards

      • Excellent communication skills and a high degree of professionalism

      • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment

      • Experience with SEMRush, Google Trends and Google Search Console

      The compensation for this position ranges from $129,210.00 - $281,305.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions, in addition to equity incentives.
