      Salary: From $27.00 per hour (paid semi-monthly). Salary to commensurate experience. This is an on-site position, located in Cedar Rapids, IA.

      Are you committed to safety and enjoy working in a team environment? Our office is searching for a reliable and dedicated Train Dispatcher to join our team.

      BASIC FUNCTION:

      Train Dispatcher: Provide functional supervision of train crews, train movements and coordinates the on-time operation, as well as the safe and efficient movement of trains and Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment on the railroad. Assignments are performed according to established policies and procedures required by the railroad and federal government. This position is responsible for maintaining and updating train and car movement records and waybill information. Provide current and accurate yard management information to train crews.

      This position will work various shifts including weekends and holidays.

      ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Train Dispatcher Role

      • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, procedures, and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
      • Direct and coordinate railroad traffic, issue permits and authorities, monitor all rail movements and maintain computerized records of all activities.
      • Communicate with personnel on weather or any environmental conditions affecting train movement.
      • Coordinate movement of trains according to operating plan and customer needs
      • Monitor train and track movements.
      • Coordinate track usage with Engineering Department personnel.
      • Accurate data input, document preparation and record maintenance of:
        • Freight inventory,
        • Hazardous material documents,
        • Train list documents, including waybills,
        • Demurrage and interchange records.
      • Maintains yard inventory and provide train and switch lists to train crews.
      • Provides accurate movement information to customers (internal and external and train crews in a timely manner.
      • Maintains accurate crew book. Calls crews, arranges cabs and hotel reservations.
      • Makes positive contributions to the department and IAIS.
      • Cross trains with the Managers and other personnel in the Customer Service Department.
      • Work Schedule: Various shifts including weekends and holidays.
      • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

      JOB REQUIREMENTS:

      Education, Licenses/Certifications and Work Experience: High School graduate or equivalent required. Some college and/or railroad work experience preferred. Prior experience in customer service, car movement, data entry and waybilling preferred. Must possess a current valid driver’s license and be insurable under the railroad’s insurance policy to operate company owned vehicles.

      Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirements:

      • Working knowledge of computers and other office equipment. (fax, phone, copier, etc.)
      • Ability to use analytical/organizational skills in prioritizing work.
      • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and writing) and establish good working relationships with co-workers, management, train crews and customers (internal and external).
      • Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures, and regulations required by IAIS and the federal government.
      • Must be able to concentrate amid voice and office noise, interruptions, and related stress.
      • Communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing.
      • Instructions will be given by various members of the IAIS team throughout any given shift and will need to be followed and/or communicated to others as required.

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

      Position involves constant (67-100%) viewing of a computer and various other types of close visual work, sitting, repetitive motion and expressing and exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word either on the telephone or in person. Frequent (34-66%) talking or hearing in person, by radio or on the telephone. Occasional (10-33%) stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, standing, walking, and lifting and exerting up to 10 pounds.

      WORKING CONDITIONS:

      Position involves working in an office setting and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions or noise levels.
