      District Sign Tech I (A16): $37,918 - $58,130
      District Sign Tech II (A17): $39,976 - $61,399

      District Sign Tech I:

      Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

      District Sign Tech II and III:

      Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

      Essential Duties:

      District Sign Tech I:

      • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials.
      • Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment
      • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moved cement bags and other items related to these duties.
      • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs.
      • Operates radios
      • Performs and maintains inventory of signs
      • Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck
      • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations, and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other departmental guidance
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      District Sign Tech II:

      • Orders signs from the regional sign shop.
      • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.
      • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
      • Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment
      • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
      • Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck.
      • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations, and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other departmental guidance
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

      Additional Duties for District Sign Tech III:

      • May assist in scheduling and assigning work
      • Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
      • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

      Minimum Qualifications:

      No formal education requirements.

      District Sign Technician I:

      -No experience or education required.

      District Sign Technician II:

      -1 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment
      operation, or related work experience.
      (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

      District Sign Technician III:

      -2 YEARS in Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy
      equipment operation, or related work experience
      (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

      Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.


      Competencies:

      District Sign Tech I-III:

      • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
      • Standard Highway Sign Designs for Texas
      • The Sign Crew Field Book
      • Inventory/stock control procedures
      • The Guide to Proper Location and Installation of Signs and Other Devices
      • Installing and repairing signs
      • Maintaining a safe working relationship

      Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

      District Sign Tech I-III:

      Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

      Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

      • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
      • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

      • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
