Criminal Investigations- Forensics
The following are the duties of this position at the full working level.
Examines and reaches conclusions regarding documentary evidence such as handwriting, typewriting and mechanical impressions, inks and papers, printing processes, indented writing, physical matches, obliterations, and alterations.
Participates with Criminal Investigation personnel nationwide in conducting investigations in the specialized and non-specialized aspects of document examination, on cases where technical problem definition, methods, and/or data may be highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain.
Conducts complex analyses, often involving submission of numerous documents by more than one agency in either a coordinated or parallel investigation, e.g., Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) and other task force cases.
Applies new developments to critical and complex examinations and develops new methods and techniques to validate findings.
Resolves issues that significantly affect CI's document analysis program (e.g., evidence handling, format for taking exemplars).

Qualifications
Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis. You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13:
You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: experience performing examinations in handwriting, hand printing and numerals to establish authorship; classification and identification of typewriting; utilization of specialized lighting techniques on questioned documents; microscopic techniques as applied to the examination of paper, inks, and other evidence submitted to the forensic laboratory; matching perforations or torn edges; processing documents for indented writing; detection of altered documents; applying the rules of evidence in legal procedures and/or usual court practices involving document examination; applying scientific instruments to the examination of questioned documents; mechanical printing devices and commercial printing processes, their output and the principles by which comparisons are conducted.
At this level, you must demonstrate experience working in an accredited forensic laboratory as a forensic document examiner or meet the requirements to apply for the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE) certification, and have successfully completed a documented training program in the forensic examination of questioned documents.
