      Position Overview

We are seeking Early Childhood Mathematics Tutors to support a federally funded research project focused on early math education. This initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Education, evaluates the impact of tiered early math curricula on preschoolers' mathematical development before kindergarten.

As a core member of the implementation team, you will work with pairs of preschool children in public preschool programs, delivering engaging math activities five days a week. The goal is to expand young children’s access to quality math learning and better prepare them for elementary school—while also supporting families and educators with effective tools and strategies.

Tutors will receive training to ensure high-fidelity delivery of the curriculum and will be responsible for implementing it consistently throughout the 2025–2026 school year. All instructional materials will be provided. In addition to teaching, tutors will maintain detailed records of each child’s math performance to support the project’s research and evaluation goals.

      Core Focus Areas

This is a part-time (approximately 15–20 hours per week), temporary position. Approximately 75% of the role will focus on direct tutoring, with the remaining 25% dedicated to record-keeping and team communication.

      1. Mathematics Tutoring

        • Deliver the early math curriculum to preschool children with a high level of fidelity.
        • Work with pairs of preschoolers to support and enhance their early math learning.

      2. Team Communication & Data Management

        • Maintain accurate and detailed records of children's math performance.
        • Submit data in a timely manner, following project protocols.
        • Communicate effectively with the project team and preschool staff as needed.

      Responsibilities

      • Attend required training workshops (September 2025 & January 2026).
      • Travel to designated preschool sites to conduct daily math sessions with preschoolers.
      • Deliver structured early math curriculum with fidelity in public preschool settings.
      • Accurately track and document children's math performance.
      • Submit data in accordance with project protocols.
      • Collaborate regularly with the project team and preschool staff.
      • Participate in weekly implementation support meetings.

      What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about early education and eager to help young children build a strong foundation in math. The ideal candidate will have:

      • Availability to work approximately 15–20 hours per week throughout the 2025–2026 school year. Candidates must also be available to attend the required training workshops in September 2025 and January 2026.
      • Ability to provide tutoring onsite at designated participating preschool locations in Eureka, Fieldbrook, or Trinidad, CA; candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of assigned school sites.
      • An Associate or Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, psychology, or a related field that equips them to carry out the responsibilities of the role.
      • A Multiple-Subject Credential with BCLAD, an Early Childhood Credential, or current progress toward these credentials is preferred, but not required.

      Qualifications and Other Skills

We’re especially interested in candidates who bring the following skills, experiences, and logistical readiness to the role:

      • Professionalism and the ability to build positive relationships with school staff, teachers, children, and families.

      • WestEd will abide by the vaccination and health clearance requirements specified by the participating program or the state.
