      As a Registered Nurse, you will work as part of the Early Days in Custody Team screening new arrivals to the prison. You will complete a detailed reception screen and assess risk on new patients. You will ascertain what needs that patient requires within those first 48 hours and make a referral to the EDIC referral Hub.

      Main duties of the job

      You will be NMC qualified and will have evidence of continued professional development throughout your clinical career thus far. Having an understanding of the complexities of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working, coupled with a non-judgmental and compassionate approach will enable you to succeed in this role, as well as a proactive approach to problem solving.

      About us

      HMP Belmarsh is a Category A mens prison with an operational capacity of over 910 inmates and is located in South East London. The site houses a High Security Unit (HSU) and is regarded as the most secure prison unit in the United Kingdom. HMP Belmarsh became operational in April 1991 and is adjacent to and adjoin to Woolwich Crown Court.

      The dedicated team in the Health in Justice division of Practice Plus Group make a real difference across over 45 prisons, young offenders and immigration removal centres.

      Job responsibilities

      As the Early Days in Custody Practitioner (Adult Nurse or Paramedic) your responsibilities will include ensuring patients have medical plans of care, assessing patients and carrying out relevant clinical investigations during their arrival, along with arranging follow-up appointments for them whilst offering advice and giving information. You must be able to clinically evaluate and ensure the safe transfer of patients to acute hospitals if needed, as well as ensuring that plans of care are understood by the patient and the prison as appropriate. You will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in clinical decision making. As part of your role you will support in undertaking audits and governance.

      You will provide healthcare to patients on site in the healthcare unit and locations across the prison. This will include some emergency care such as suturing, providing emergency response to undertaking dressings and performing a primary care function. There is a focus on health promotion and keeping the patients within the prison, safe and well by providing effective safe care. You will lead a team of healthcare practitioners some in specialist roles to deliver an effective safe medical service within the prison.

      You will contribute to our healthcare strategy and vision to;

      Provide outstanding evidence based care to our patients, seeking out, listening to and acting on their feedback, so that care is personalised and informed by what matters to them.

      Deliver non-judgemental care that makes a real difference, as defined throughout our bespoke Health in Justice Competency framework.
