      Job Description:

Are you interested in learning how we apply economics to regulate the UK communications sectors?

As the UK’s communications regulator, we’re at the forefront of innovation, working on projects that shape the future of how we stay connected. From phones and broadband to TV, radio, and even the postal service, we’re responsible for keeping the UK connected. But that’s just the beginning. We’re also tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time – making the online world a safer, and more trusted place.

You’ll be part of one of the UK’s largest and most dynamic teams of competition and regulatory economists, data analysts, and finance professionals. Together, we work on some of the most exciting sectors in the UK – whether it’s the BBC, TV, broadband, mobile, online services, or the wireless airwaves powering the latest tech devices.

During the work experience, you will conduct desk research and create a presentation on a topic related to Ofcom’s work. At the end of the week, you will have the chance to present your findings to members of the Ofcom’s Economics and Analytics group.

You will also have the opportunity to attend various catch ups and training sessions hosted by the Economics and Analytics group, allowing you to expand your knowledge, and connect with colleagues at every level, from recent grads and interns to directors.

      How the scheme works

Successful applicants will be aligned to one of our London, Manchester or Edinburgh offices for the following week:

      • London: (14th – 18th July)

      • Manchester: (14th – 18th July)

      • Edinburgh: (30th June – 4th July)

We ask that candidates identify their office preference. We ask that students attend the office in person during the week.

Work experience students will be refunded food/travel expenses of up to £10 per day.

      Necessary requirements

This work experience is for students who are currently in year 12 (England and Wales), S5 (Scotland) or Year 13 (Northern Ireland).

No prior knowledge, skills or experience is needed for this work experience. However, we do ask that the candidate has a real interest in economics and is potentially looking to study economics in the future.

      The application process

To be considered for the work experience, you will need complete your application by 23.59 on Thursday 29 May 2025. This is the only part of the application process - students will be selected based on their responses to these questions. We will not be conducting interviews.

Our processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need information in an alternative format or have specific preferences, please contact economicsandanalysticsworkexperience@Ofcom.org.uk as soon as possible, and by no later than 23.59 on Tuesday 27 May 2025, in order to allow us to process your request.

Ofcom has a clear mission: to make communications work for everyone. To be able to deliver on this, we want our organisation to reflect the diversity of background, experience, upbringing and thought that exists across the UK. We aim to recruit from the widest pool of candidates possible – no matter your social background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or disability.

Where positions are listed as full-time, we remain open to reduced hours, part-time arrangements, job shares, and other flexible working options. From day one, we champion flexible work arrangements to accommodate individual needs.

We also warmly welcome applicants who are returning to the workforce after a break – for whatever reason. If you have taken time away and are ready to rejoin, we look forward to reviewing your application.

Our recruitment processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need information in an alternative format or have specific preferences, please contact our recruitment team at resourcing@ofcom.org.uk or call 0330 912 1378.

As a Disability Confident employer, we offer interviews to disabled applicants who meet essential criteria for advertised roles. Learn more about this scheme here. https://careers.ofcom.org.uk/careers/how-we-hire/
