      About Ofcom

Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator, overseeing sectors including telecommunications, post, broadcast TV and radio, and online services.

Our culture is clear - we live by our values: Empowerment; Excellence; Collaboration; Agility and Respect. These define how we work to deliver our purpose, now and in the future. The behaviours which support these values set the path for a fully inclusive and innovative culture at Ofcom.

We focus not only on what we do, but how we do it. We pride ourselves on being an organisation of people who genuinely care about helping others.

      About the Team

Ofcom’s Economics and Analytics Group is a dynamic, international team of over 100 competition and regulatory economists, data analysts and finance experts.

We have two streams of specialism:

      • Competition/regulation: the study of how competition affects markets and industries. It looks at how companies compete, how markets work, and how regulations influence prices, choices, and fairness for consumers. This field examines the balance between allowing competition to drive innovation and efficiency, while also ensuring that markets operate fairly and serve the public interest.

      • Policy Evaluation role: is the process of assessing policies to determine their effectiveness and impact. It involves analysing whether policies achieve their intended goals, how efficiently they are implemented, and their overall effects on society. The aim is to provide evidence-based insights to improve policymaking and ensure policies achieve desired outcomes.

      Purpose of the Role

The work experience is for students who can travel to our Edinburgh office, and will take place on the following week:

      Edinburgh 1st- 5th July

During the work experience, the successful candidates will contribute to real current projects. This will be by creating a presentation from desk research to present to the relevant project team at the end of the week. Candidates will also be able to attend internal meetings and have discussions with various colleagues, which give insight into the economic work conducted across Ofcom

The skills, knowledge and experience you will need for success

This work experience is for current students aged 16-18 only. No prior knowledge, skills or experience is needed for this work experience. However, we do ask that the candidate has a real interest in economics and is potentially looking to study economics in the future.

Ofcom has a clear mission: to make communications work for everyone. To be able to deliver on this, we want our organisation to reflect the diversity of background, experience, upbringing and thought that exists across the UK. We aim to recruit from the widest pool of candidates possible – no matter your social background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or disability.

Where positions are listed as full-time, we remain open to reduced hours, part-time arrangements, job shares, and other flexible working options. From day one, we champion flexible work arrangements to accommodate individual needs.

We also warmly welcome applicants who are returning to the workforce after a break – for whatever reason. If you have taken time away and are ready to rejoin, we look forward to reviewing your application.

Our recruitment processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need information in an alternative format or have specific preferences, please contact our recruitment team at resourcing@ofcom.org.uk or call 0330 912 1378.
