      Overview

      Performs Patient Care Activities as delegated by the Nurse and/or Physician for patients of all age's groups with both acute and chronic health problems. The Non-Licensed Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, phlebotomy, and 12-lead ECG tracings.
      Qualifications

      License/Certifications:

      Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)

      Education:

      H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

      Other Knowledge/Skills:

      At least one semester of nursing clinical experience; Worked as CNA within past 24 months; Successful completion of Carle's HCT In Training Program; Relevant medical military training; Completion of CNA coursework within past 24 months; Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)


      Responsibilities

      Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission by:
      PARTICIPATION:
      in cost containment
      development/maintenance of positive work environment
      minimizing overtime
      attending required classes and meetings
      participating in unit committees
      adheres to all policies and procedures
      PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY:
      applies protective devices correctly
      anticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimum
      assists RN in planning patient care
      maintains a safe unit environment
      PROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL:
      washes hands before and after patient contact
      handles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocol
      maintains sterile asepsis
      changes and secures dressings
      maintains isolation technique
      PROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY:
      utilizes p.p.e. appropriately
      keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side
      PROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:
      maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms) clean/stocked
      restocks equipment in patient rooms
      accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers and other pertinent equipment
      completes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service Provides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values. Evidenced by:
      PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED:
      Perform pulse oximetry
      Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infants
      performs and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording
      performs lab testing as appropriate
      provides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion
      Performs splint application (Methodist only)
      Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.
      Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.
      PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY:
      temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN)
      Pulse - apical and radial,
      Blood pressure,
      height and weight,
      intake and output,
      pain ratings Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions. Performs and documents special procedures per policy:
      application of heat/cold
      decubitus care
      pelvic exam setup
      I & D setup
      surgical skin prep
      apply ace/TEDS/binders
      apply/remove leads
      assist coughing & deep breathing
      assist with physical exam
      maintain and clean suction equipment
      application of hypo/hyperthermia unit
      care of oxygen equipment.
      room set-up for trauma
      suture set-up
      moderate sedation set-up
      patient prep for any procedure
      Demonstrates a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.
      Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment. Performs direct patient care that significantly impacts patient satisfaction evidenced by:
      PROMOTION OF PATIENT WELLNESS:
      maintain a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered
      ready to monitor patient post-procedure
      participates in admission, transport and discharge of patients
      assist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort
      ASSIST PATIENTS WITH NUTRITION MANAGEMENT:
      prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives
      delivers trays
      documents intake per policy
      feeds dependent patients as needed
      provides fresh water, ice and snacks.
      PROVIDES ASSISTANCE WITH ELIMINATION PROCEDURES:
      offers/removes bedpans and urinals
      provides catheter care per policy
      removes Foley catheters
      Applies external urinary catheters
      empty urinary drainage bags using goggles and gloves
      collect specimens for ordered tests
      catheterize female and male patients
      communicates any intake and output

      Compensation and Benefits

      The compensation range for this position is $17.89per hour - $28.98per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
