      We’re hiring an Editorial Director to oversee all of our news coverage at theSkimm.

      About the role and team

      Our team is made up of collaborative, unique, kind, inclusive individuals who bring their best to work every day. As a mission-driven brand, we have the unique ability to assess what our audience needs to know vs. chasing what every other brand is covering. We have a lot of creative freedom and understanding of our audience, and we work together to deliver informative, accurate, accessible content. We create the articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that power our website, newsletters, podcasts, social channels, and more.

      How you’ll contribute to our mission

      You'll be responsible for overseeing all news strategy, products, and teams at theSkimm. This role reports to the Executive Editor.

      What you'll be doing

      • Overseeing news strategy – from our overall POV to how we cover day-to-day stories and breaking news events across platforms, including but not limited to social
      • Overseeing news products – Daily Skimm, Daily Skimm Weekend, etc. – to ensure that we're producing quality and engaging content for our audience
      • Managing the news teams and schedules, helping to cultivate a strong culture of excellence, inclusivity, and growth
      • Owning news campaigns such as elections, Olympics, end-of-year coverage, etc.
      • Working closely with Sales, Engineering, Product, and other departments to collaborate on product development, design, process, and sales inventory

      You’re ready for this! Here’s a bit more about what we’re looking for

      • An editorial leader and self-starter who lives and breathes news
        • 5-10 years of digital news editing/production experience
        • 2-3 years managing news coverage, ideally across platforms
      • Demonstrated experience using audience and performance data to inform editorial strategy
      • The energy and creativity to bring big ideas
      • Proven ability to work professionally and seamlessly with other departments — sales, product, design, etc. — and balance company priorities with what the audience needs and wants
      • Strong management skills and demonstrated ability to motivate a team through difficult news cycles
      • Strong organizational skills, particularly around project management and scheduling
      • Availability to work some weekend hours and guide breaking news coverage as needed
      • Ability and willingness to represent theSkimm as news talent on panels, podcasts, print, TV, etc..
      • Passion for theSkimm and its mission
      • Bachelor’s Degree

      The expected annual base salary for this role is $120,000-$135,000. We’ll consider a variety of factors when determining the offered base salary including an evaluation of a candidate’s skills, abilities, experience, location, market demands, and internal parity.

      WHAT ABOUT THE OFFICE

      This is a full-time role based in New York, NY with flexibility for remote work.

      Our office is available to use three days a week - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We have a hybrid environment and ask that employees within the New York Metro area come together in person a minimum of three days per month. All other days are up to the discretion of the employees during the three days a week that the office will be open. We are continuing to closely monitor the state of COVID-19 in New York and will adjust this plan accordingly.

      We will require COVID-19 vaccinations for anyone coming to our office. We are following CDC recommendations and will also require additional boosters, and will always follow CDC and NY state guidance on wearing masks in the office.
