      The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports faculty and course instructors in their professional development as teachers, and provides consultations, resources and technology support to enhance learningin their courses and programs. CTL also enhances academic skill development both within and beyond courses through our English Language Development Support, Facilitated Study Groups, Mathematics and Statistics Learning Support, Experiential Learning, andWriting Support programs.

      Your opportunity:

      As the Educational Technology Specialist, you will work as part of an Educational Technology Team assisting faculty members, staff and students use web-based applications such as learning management and web content management systems, organize and deliver accessible application training programs and documentation, and participate as a tester and/or trainer in development projects (including AODA compliance).

      Your primary role is to administer and support the University’s Learning Management System and teaching and administrative tools, such as the University’s Content Management System(CMS), websites (Drupal based open-source content management systems), various user authorization/identity management systems (e.g. UTORid), and other in-house web-based applications. You will collaborate with the Academic and Collaborative Technologies (ACT)Support in the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation on our downtown campus for routine inquiries and escalation of questions/concerns, and also with our UTSC's Information and Instructional Technologies Support team on a regular basis, accepting, analyzing, and responding to application-related support tickets.

      You will also create and coordinate instructional and training materials on how to use software, and therefore, you will have an instructional design background which will allow you to understand how to effectively create materials tohelp adults learn and instruct on the use of software. In addition to the creation of training materials, you will often deliver training sessions and workshops, or assist with the coordination of these events.


      Your responsibilities will include:

      • Probing for information from end-users to identify problems and establish needs (relating to the use of educational technology to support teaching and learning)
      • Conducting needs assessments to determine end-user technical requirements (e.g. determining if Faculty member's exam should be loaded using an assignment or quiz tool)
      • Configuring web applications according to objectives or user feedback (e.g. Configuring tools in the Academic Toolbox such as Zoom and MS Teams, according to users needs or objectives)
      • Providing detailed information to instructors on how to build a course shell (in Quercus, anon-line teaching and learning tool)
      • Researching, analyzing and recommending potential changes to system features (as part of a managed review process)
      • Assessing and determining best practices and standards for multiple instructional modalities (would determine technical best practices)
      • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
      • Serving as a resource to a group or on a function (e.g. assisting Faculty on how to use software such as Bb Collaborate or Quercus)

      Essential Qualifications:

      • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, business or education or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
      • Minimum three years' experience in application support, specifically with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Content Management Systems (CMS), as well as with basic website development (HTML, CSS) and general computer software support
      • Experience with instructional design, in order to create effective and clear training materials and presentations
      • Experience delivering effective training sessions and workshops using audio-visual communication and presentation technology (e.g. conference phones, video-conferencing units to projectors, wireless presenters, and Smart Boards)
      • Ability to solve complex technical and logistical problems and demonstrate natural empathy, patience and the willingness to take responsibility for finding a solution to a problem
      • Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal and listening skills
      • Ability to exercise tact and discretion regarding confidential materials and matters
      • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure, meet strict deadlines and deal with a high volume of client and vendor demands
      • Ability to work well as a team member in a multi-professional environment working with a wide range of faculty, staff and students
      • Ability to learn quickly from reference manuals and on-line help facilities and keep technical skills up-to-date
      • Excellent attention to detail and ability to act on one’s own initiative with minimal supervision
      • Ability to conduct research on various elements related to technology support work
      • Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat and software development tools for graphical diagramming (e.g. Visio, Smart Draw)

      Assets (Nonessential):

      • Technical certifications in Adobe, Microsoft
      • Experience working with Articulate Storyline, Camtasia Studio, H5P, and Kaltura
      • Work experience in a university, government, or healthcare setting
