      Position Summary

      Incumbents of positions in this series test, repair, install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems and equipment; troubleshoot electrical and related equipment; maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials; inspect the work of outside contractors; and determine materials and/or equipment necessary for a job and on-the-job procedure changes. The basic purpose of this work is to ensure the safe and adequate functioning of electrical systems and equipment.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various types of traffic signal equipment.
      • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair wiring on state buildings.
      • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment on moveable and non-moveable bridges.
      • Have a working knowledge of the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
      • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical arrow boards.
      • Perform related duties as required.
      • Incumbent should be available to respond to emergency calls on a 24/7 basis.

      Qualifications Required At Hire

      • Knowledge of state and local electrical codes. Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity.
      • Knowledge of and ability to use basic arithmetic and algebra with speed and accuracy, and to perform algebraic calculations to determine voltage, amperage, and resistance factors.
      • Knowledge of and skill in the types and uses of small hand tools and hand held power tools used in electrical practice such as pliers, screwdrivers, drills, etc. and equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work.
      • Knowledge of safety practices and precautions observed in the electrical trade.
      • Knowledge of inspection techniques used in the electrical trade.
      • Skill in the use of precision measuring equipment, gauges, and instrumentation used in electrical work.
      • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects. Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds. Manual dexterity.
      • Ability to understand, explain, and apply the laws, rules, and regulations concerning electrical practice.
      • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
      • Ability to write clearly and concisely; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to prepare and use charts, graphs, and tables.
      • Ability to read and interpret documents such as electrical plans, schematics, drawings, etc.
      • Ability to install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring systems and equipment.
      • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations.
