      Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Technicians of all levels to join our Emergency Services team. At Brunswick County, our EMS Department is committed to providing highly responsive, effective, and efficient emergency and non-emergency care to citizens and visitors across Brunswick County and surrounding areas.

      The EMS Technician works as part of a team and performs a variety of both skilled and technical work in accordance with their current EMS certification level (Basic, Advanced, or Paramedic). Work requires considerable independent judgement in decision making, while also operating under established emergency medical procedures and techniques, applicable state and federal laws, legal ordinances, and established policies, procedures, and protocols. Responsibilities include:
      • Responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls.
      • Assessing and evaluating situations at scenes of calls, surveying and securing scenes, and requesting additional assistance as necessary.
      • Determining mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and initiation of treatment.
      • Applying necessary medical treatment.
      • Operating an ambulance to transport patients.
      • Performing administrative duties, including preparing and submitting incident reports.
      • Operating department emergency vehicles and performing routine vehicle maintenance as required.

      Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide a high level of customer service while exercising tact, courtesy, and firmness when dealing with sick/injured persons, their family members, and the public is required. The EMS Technician reports to an EMS Operations Supervisor.

      Starting salary is based on certification level and experience.
      • EMT – Basic: $18.39 - $24.83 hour
      • EMT – Advanced: $20.28 - $27.37 hour
      • EMT – Paramedic: $23.47 - $31.69 per hour

      EMS Technicians work 12.25-hour shifts and may be assigned to one of several bases located across Brunswick County. EMS Technicians scheduled to work night shifts will receive a night shift differential at a rate of $2.50 per hour. High school diploma AND six (6) to twelve (12) months experience as an EMT-Basic, EMT-Advanced, or EMT-Paramedic; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

      • Valid NC Office of Emergency Medical Services certification (Basic, Advanced, or Paramedic) is required.
      • Valid NC or SC driver license is required.
      • An associate degree in emergency medical care is preferred.
      • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification is highly desirable.

      NOTE: Individuals hired with EMT-Basic certification will be required to obtain an EMT-Advanced certification within the first eighteen (18) months of full-time employment.

      Physical Requirements
      Must be able physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medicines, automatic cardiac monitors/defibrillators/pacers, two-way radios, mechanics tools, related office equipment, and motor vehicle. Must be able to exert a minimum of 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Very Heavy Work.
