      GCI's Engineer II, IP Engineering position is expected to provide engineering design and implementation services necessary to support the company’s IP/MPLS core network, carrier Ethernet transport systems, cellular data core systems, and/or video transmission services. Will be required to provide technical leadership and escalation support for various operations and engineering groups as well as technical training and mentorship to team members. Requires excellent communication skills to facilitate collaboration with various internal departments to ensure the reliable operation and growth of a converged and scalable carrier network.

      Essential Duties:

      • Test new technologies and service architectures in lab environments
      • Plan, design, implement, and document new network implementations.
      • Complete Engineering Estimates and Installation Packages as needed.
      • Provide escalation and troubleshooting support for operations teams.
      • Provide mentorship of more junior staff to support the growth of technical knowledge and experience.

      Additional Job Requirements : As a mid-level engineer position, must have a comprehensive understanding of the company’s IP/MPLS core network and possess the skills and motivation required to independently complete assigned engineering projects with minimal assistance and/or guidance. Must have developed project management skills necessary to manage multiple simultaneous projects while maintaining business deliverables for timeline and budget. Must have comprehensive troubleshooting skills to assist operations groups in resolving the majority of network issues that may arise.

      Essential Duties for this position :

      • Plan, design, implement, and document new network implementations.
      • Test new technologies and service architectures in lab environments
      • Complete Engineering Estimates and Installation Packages as needed.
      • Provide escalation and troubleshooting support for operations teams.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

      • High-level understanding of standard engineering concepts such as high availability, redundancy, reliability, scalability, and security
      • Strong ability to create and edit network drawings using Microsoft Visio application.
      • Advanced experience with the configuration of Alcatel/Nokia, Cisco, Brocade, or Juniper routers and switches
      • Advanced understanding of routing protocols such as BGP, ISIS, OSPF, EIGRP, etc.
      • Strong understanding of project management concepts
      • Strong understanding of RSVP, LDP, and PIM
      • Strong understanding of data center network design
      • Strong understanding of common transport technologies such as Ethernet, SONET, TDM, Fiber, Microwave, Satellite, Wi-Fi, cellular, etc.
      • Extensive experience with layer-2 Ethernet technologies such as VLANs, STP, LACP, MC-LAG, etc.
      • Strong analytic, strategic, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
      • Self-directed and motivated, highly focused on the company and departmental goals

      Certifications: Industry specific certifications relevant to the discipline are highly valued and may contribute toward education requirements.

      • Nokia NRS I / NRS II
      • Brocade BCNE / BCNP
      • Juniper JNCIA / JNCIS

      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Minimum four years of relevant and progressive technical experience in a Carrier Ethernet or large ISP environment.
      • High School diploma or equivalent required.
      • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Telecommunications or related field is required.
      • Or, in addition to minimum experience required; a combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis.
      • Graduate degree in Engineering may be substituted for professional engineering experience on a year for year basis.
      Requirements at All Levels:

      Physical Requirements : Primarily sedentary office work with some travel to remote locations across the state of Alaska and Washington where indoor and outdoor work may be required. Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

      Working Conditions : The work area must be quiet and free of distractions. Lighting must be adequate and without glare. Distracting noises should be kept to a minimum. The employee’s desk must be adequate, designed to safely accommodate the equipment the employee must use, e.g., computer, printer, keyboard, monitor etc. The employee must have reliable connectivity to the internet to access GCI via VPN. Employee workstation must comply with GCI’s ergonomics standards. ,

      Occasional travel in rural Alaska, some outside work required. Qualified candidate must be able to occasionally work in cramped spaces and at heights, primarily inside and outside of remote company and customer facilities. Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes (fumes and odors, dust, low light conditions, intermittent weather).

      The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.

      Driving Requirements (if applicable) : Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to drive, as use of personal vehicle for transportation between various company facilities within the Anchorage area is required. Must be able to drive when in remote communities and operate ATV-style vehicles if necessary.
