Join Southwest as a S ummer 202 4 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from May 21 to August 9 , 2024 .
Work onsite at our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX.
Workplace flexibility for 50% of the time is typically available, but interns are expected to be onsite for Intern- related events .
Dedicate 40 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks.
Receive hourly pay of $22 and receive a one-time $1,000 stipend on your first paycheck .
Receive free, unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel) .
Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.
Work on various size engineering projects in a maintenance or operations environment.
The Intern will be utilized as an entry-level engineer and may get hands on experience with aircraft under supervision.
Assist with special projects and events as requested .
Perform some research projects.
Update and maintain aircraft performance calculations.
Support operation through airport capability analysis and market studies.
Develop IOS applications to support Flight Ops and NOC.
Develop and maintain data structure to support analytics projects .
Support timely communication and updates related to initiatives in assigned areas.
Must possess the confidence to work with all levels of the department , from the frontline Employees to the Department Vice President.
Confident and effective presenting to department Leadership.
Light travel may be required to gain hands-on experience.
Create an Engineering Document (EA or EO) and ad hoc maintenance tasks.
May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required .
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.
This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future .
Progress towards degree with a major/minor in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aviation Maintenance Science, or other Engineering related degree.
Minimum Sophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of May 202 4 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at time of application.
To be eligible you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of a pplication.
Work experience in an Aviation/Aerospace environment a plus.
Previous Work or Internship experience in an engineering related role is a plus.
Participation in Aviation/Aerospace organizations and clubs a plus.
Completion of 9 hours of Engineering-related coursework is preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft applications is required .
Understanding how to write technical documents/reports is required .
A basic knowledge and understanding of current Engineering drawings and software to create them is a plus.
Basic understanding and knowledge of maintaining the aircraft structure, avionics, aircraft performance, systems, avionics, interiors, and powerplant is preferred.
Basic understanding of how to create software is a plu s.
Basic understanding of data analytics is a plus.
Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and the willingness to function as part of a team.
Ability to multi-task and complete assignments with tight deadlines.
Ability to be flexible and adapt assignments and projects as needed.
Good oral and written communication skills required .
Required: Full time 40hrs a week
Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day
You must reside in Dallas, TX during the internship and work a hybrid schedule of at least 50% in office and be onsite for applicable intern events.
Program Dates: May 2 1 st – August 9 th , 2024
$2 5 per hour + $1,000 stipend paid one time on first paycheck

Southwest Airlines' Engineer Internships span across several different Teams within the Engineering Department . Interns may be asked to support a variety of projects within one or more of the following Teams:
Aircraft Performance Engineering
The Operations Engineering Team works within the Network Operations Control Department and analyzes aerodynamic configurations and modifications, airport and aviation critical area changes, and environmental conditions to determine mission capabilities for our fleet of aircraft . We provide Pilots and Dispatchers with information and data to show them what the aircraft can do in a given situation. We develop special flight procedures to help minimize the impact of performance-limiting situations.
Powerplant Engineering
The Powerplant Engineering Teams work within the Technical Operations Department and coordinate engine and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) maintenance requirements with pertinent Departments and Field Service Engineers. In addition, they coordinate with powerplant manufacturers, like CFM, as well as engine Maintenance Service Providers concerning technical, maintenance, and operational problems. Engineers also evaluate engineering document policies and procedures to determine if changes are needed. All engine maintenance, both on-wing and off-wing, is directed and authorized by Powerplant Engineering.
