  Job Responsibilities

  This position is accountable for assisting Resident Engineers and Resident Technicians in the inspection,
  layout and documentation of highway construction projects.

  Construction Project Dollar Value: $100,000 up
  Number of Projects: 1-5

  This position reports to a Resident Engineer, but based on staffing levels and operational needs may report to
  a Resident Technician and/or a Senior Resident Engineer. There are no subordinate positions.

  
  This position operates within an environment of ensuring that the contractor provides a quality improvement in
  a timely fashion according to the plans and specifications. This position assists in the field staking of a project
  as well as inspection and documentation of the contractor’s work.

  
  Typical problems involve enforcement of specifications upon the contractor and working with other crew members in construction staking. The greatest challenge is in providing timely and accurate layouts and
  inspections so as to not delay the project or require corrective work.

  
  The incumbent will act as a rod-person, instrument person, record keeper, or stake-driver, and will inspect
  earthwork, drainage, concrete paving, hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving and other related items. Office work may
  include checking and reducing field survey notes, plotting cross sections, checking plans, and preparing
  computations. The incumbent may be required to operate electronic survey instruments and input data into
  computerized spreadsheets and databases.

  
  The incumbent operates under a strict set of policies and rules and has little latitude to deviate from them. The
  incumbent is guided by federal, state and local laws as well as the plans and specifications of a particular
  project. All but routine problems must be referred to the Resident Engineer or Resident Technician.

  The incumbent has contact with other members of the crew, contractor’s personnel and occasionally with the
  public. This position requires extensive districtwide travel and some statewide, which may include overnight
  stays, overtime, shift work as required per contractor, and the ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep
  terrain, wade in water, and deal with poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes; and to perform
  outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, windy,
  muddy), and active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.

  The effectiveness of this position can be measured by the accuracy and timeliness of layouts and inspections
  of the project.

  Principal Accountabilities

  1. Keeps accurate and legible records of inspections, field measurements and documentation of contract
     items.
  2. Keeps the Resident Engineer or Resident Technician informed on status and/or problems on contractor’s work.
  3. Provides accurate and efficient measurements and construction layout as a member of the staking crew.
  4. Inspects various items of construction for conformity with the contract.
  5. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

  Qualifications

  • Education/Experience:
    • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum OR
    • Two years of engineering experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Extensive districtwide travel and some statewide, which may include overnight stays
  • Overtime
  • Shift work as required per contractor
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, and deal with poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes; and to perform outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy), and active construction sites and roadways open to traffic
