- Conduct safety inspections, document, track, and escalate deficiencies as appropriate. Provide just-in-time education to operational leaders regarding safety concerns and necessary resolution.
- Develops and maintains written plans, procedures, and applicable training and presents reports to committees and workgroups.
- Conducts training sessions for general workforce members including, use of personal protective equipment, conducting fire drills, and construction safety protocol.
- Conduct safety risk assessments across industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, environment of care, and emergency preparedness programs including pre-construction risk assessments (PCRA) and indoor air quality (IAQ). Develops safety plans, solution proposals, oversees activities of consultants and vendors as they relate to EH&S; such as construction activities, remediation work, hazardous waste removal and disposal.
- Responds to safety concerns or developing incidents with the potential to disrupt operations. Serves as a member of hazardous materials response team, responding to spills as appropriate to their level of training. Fulfills rotational on-call responsibilities.
- Supports and oversees EH&S software systems/databases including safety data sheets, and deficiency databases to ensure processes are followed and verifying data is accurately maintained. This includes adding and correcting information as appropriate and problem-solving issues.
- Arranges, contracts, maintains program records and permits. Gathers data, prepares and submits required reports. Serves as a site contact and escort for regulatory compliance inspections including Labor and Industries, Department of Ecology, Department of Health, Seattle Fire Department, & The Joint Commission.
- Supports and oversees program operations including respiratory protection, conducting exposure monitoring, emergency eyewash and shower testing, life safety, and use of hazardous materials. Ensures compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Develops and implements improvement plans.
- Consult with employees regarding recognized and potential occupational exposures and investigate occupational accidents and illness as necessary.

- Perform other duties as required.
- Assist in conducting air, noise, and chemical exposure monitoring in the workplace.
- Collect samples for analysis, including air, water, and surface samples.
- Operate and calibrate monitoring equipment, such as air sampling pumps and noise dosimeters.
- Gather and record data from monitoring activities and assessments.
- Compile and maintain accurate records of environmental data and safety reports.
- Assist in analyzing data to identify trends and potential hazards.
- Participate in routine inspections and audits of work areas, such as research labs, to identify potential health risks.
- Support the assessment of workplace processes and equipment for safety compliance.
- Generate reports and help implement corrective actions to mitigate identified hazards through follow-up with inspected areas.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local occupational health and safety regulations.
- Help prepare reports and documentation required for regulatory agencies.
- Stay updated on changes in health and safety regulations and standards.
- Support the development and delivery of safety training programs for employees including online training modules.
- Assist in educating workers about safe work practices and hazard controls.
- Help develop safety materials and presentations.
- Support Facilities & Engineering programs including fall protection, confined spaces, electrical safety/lock-out tag-out.
- Aid in the implementation of industrial hygiene and occupational health programs.
- Assist in maintaining inventories of safety equipment and personal protective gear.
- Provide administrative support, including committee involvement, maintaining EH&S CenterNet pages, EH&S software systems, scheduling, report writing, and file management.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in life sciences, physical sciences, occupational safety, environmental health or related scientific field.
- One year experience in a research or clinical laboratory
- Technical competency and laboratory experience with research involving recombinant DNA/RNA or biohazards
- Experience performing or assisting with laboratory safety inspections
- Experience teaching, presenting or training
- 2+ years similar experience, preferably in healthcare/labs
- Experience supporting relevant safety programs a plus
- Good writing, analytical, verbal communication and computer skills
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to wear a respirator and required personal protective equipment
- Capability to lift 50 pounds
- Understanding of the fundamental principles of industrial hygiene, including anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards.
- Analytical skills with the ability to interpret data.
- Technical proficiency in using monitoring equipment and software.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
- Effective communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations and industrial hygiene principles.
- Physical ability to conduct fieldwork in various conditions.
- Capability to evaluate complex situations and make informed decisions regarding hazard control.
- Ability to apply scientific methods to solve practical problems in the workplace.
- Awareness of chemical properties, toxicology, and safety data sheets (SDS).

The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department manages a comprehensive safety program including: industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, environment of care, and emergency preparedness. The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist position performs daily activities required to fulfill the goals, audit plans, work plans, initiatives, and duties of these EH&S programs at the direction of the EH&S Manager.
The EH&S Specialist works collaboratively across Fred Hutch and partner institutions making independent decisions to maintain Fred Hutch safety standards and compliance with governmental regulations and accreditation requirements.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $72,946 to $109,408, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
