      The Opportunity:

      This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies for the Environmental Health Specialist and/or the Environmental Health Specialist - Trainee job profiles in the Environmental Health Services unit.

      All candidates are eligible for a $1500 hiring incentive to be paid on their first paycheck. The incentive will be prorated based on the position's FTE.

      Salary will be within the range specific to the role offered:

      Environmental Health Specialist Trainee: $30.04 - $36.79

      Environmental Health Specialist: $33.69 - $41.35

      The Unit:

      As part of Multnomah County’s Health Department, EHS enacts a mission to protect the public from environmental health related issues, including food, water, vector borne diseases and environmental health threats and disasters. The EHS unit performs this complex work by implementing programs for Inspections, Vector Control, Vital Records, Food Handlers, Tobacco Control and Prevention, and Healthy Homes & Communities. The employees within this unit are dedicated to understanding numerous environmental health concerns by using a public health and equity-informed lens to analyze local environmental health issues, regulate specified businesses and enforce state and local environmental health policies.

      The Role:

      This posting allows you to apply for both the Environmental Health Specialists and Environmental Health Specialist Trainee role. Both positions perform a variety of inspection duties directed toward the promotion and maintenance of environmental health laws in licensed facilities such as food service operations, swimming pool and spa pools, tourist accommodations, schools, and other facilities. The salary and level of responsibility will be commensurate with the roles designation as EHS or EHS - Trainee.

For the Environmental Health Specialist (not trainee) role you MUST possess registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Oregon or the National Environmental Health Association.


      Required Minimum Qualifications by role:

      Environmental Health Specialist Trainee

      Education and Experience (outlined in ORS 700.035 ):

      • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including at least 45 quarter hours or the equivalent semester hours in science courses related to environmental sanitation.

      OR

      • Possession of at least 15 quarter hours, or the equivalent semester hours, in science courses relating to environmental sanitation from an accredited college or university AND at least five years of experience in environmental sanitation or related activities, as determined by the board, under the supervision of a registered environmental health specialist or a person possessing equal qualifications, as determined by the board.

      • Additional Requirements:

        • Possession of a valid driver license at time of hire.

        • Demonstration of a commitment to environmental justice

        • Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check.

      Note: This Trainee role is a pathway to the Environmental Health Specialist role and is limited to two years, during which time you can work towards qualifying to register as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Oregon or the National Environmental Health Association. Trainee’s often (but not always) transition into specialists with Multnomah County.

      Environmental Health Specialist

      Education and Experience (outlined in ORS 700.030 ):

      • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, or university, including at least 45 quarter hours or the equivalent semester hours in science courses related to environmental sanitation AND two years of experience in environmental sanitation under the supervision of a registered environmental health specialist.

      OR

      • A Graduate degree in public or community health from an accredited college or university AND one year of experience in environmental sanitation under the supervision of a registered environmental health specialist.

      Additional Requirements:

      • License or Certificate: Possession of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Oregon or the National Environmental Health Association.

      • Possession of a valid driver license at time of hire.

      • Demonstration of a commitment to environmental justice

      • Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check.
