- Conducts supervised inspections of various facilities, including but not limited to food handling and preparation establishments, schools, hospitals, detention centers, water supply and sewage disposal systems, solid waste facilities, recreation/pool facilities and other public/private facilities, to monitor compliance with all applicable laws, codes and standards of sanitation.
- Conducts sampling, surveys and other methods of gathering information concerning compliance.
- Assists in planning, coordinating and managing the daily operations of one or more environmental health programs as assigned; functions as a resource specialist in assigned program(s) to develop environmental health policies and procedures and to recommend local ordinances and standards.
- Evaluates and approves hazardous waste site remediation plans and analytical reports submitted by consulting engineers and other professionals; provides regulatory oversight for monitoring and sampling.
- Guides and assists Environmental Health Specialists and/or Aides; provides training, counseling and professional assistance on technical skills and professional responsibilities; identifies training needs and provides training for staff; assures training programs meet goals; serves as liaison between the Department and various organizations and agencies; serves on committees and task forces.
- Requires a valid California driver’s license.
- Other certificates and levels of training may be required dependent upon assignment.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Environmental Health Science, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Public Health or related field
- Possession of a valid letter of eligibility indicating acceptance of educational requirements issued by the State of California Department of Public Health
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Environmental Health Science, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Public Health or related field
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the California State Department of Public Health
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Science, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Public Health or related field
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the California State Department of Public Health
- Three (3) years of experience at the level of Environmental Health Specialist II

Environmental Health Specialist I :
$26.77 - $32.53 Hourly / $2,141.60 – $2,602.40 Bi-Weekly
Environmental Health Specialist II :
$29.54 - $35.91 Hourly / $2,363.20 - $2,872.80 Bi-Weekly
Environmental Health Specialist Senior :
$35.12 - $42.69 Hourly / $2,809.60 - $3,415.20 Bi-Weekly
Environmental Health Specialist I: Entry-level - The incumbent learns to perform a variety of duties for the purpose of preventing environmental health hazards and promoting and protecting public health and the environment.
Environmental Health Specialist II: Mid-level - Performs investigations and inspections relating to the enforcement of environmental health laws and regulations.
Environmental Health Specialist Senior: Supervisory-level- Develops, implements and manages a variety of complex environmental health programs, for the purpose of preventing environmental health hazards and promoting and protecting public health and the environment. New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
