PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing maintenance and moderately skilled tasks in trade practices.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs general maintenance and moderately skilled maintenance work at facilities owned by or under control of the department’s land, buildings and equipment including but not limited to simple automotive repairs and light equipment repairs; Sharpens saws and axes; Performs simple plumbing tasks such as a union change or faucet repairs, rough carpentry, painting, minor electrical repairs, etc.; Operates and maintains trucks, tractors, boats and related equipment; Uses and maintains firefighting equipment; May lead a small seasonal crew or group of firefighters; May do planting, transplanting, cutting and pruning; May perform tasks relating to care, propagation and stocking of fish including maintenance and repair of hatchery and stocking equipment; May work with blueprints and specifications; May work with support services in areas of general maintenance of lands, buildings and dams; May perform patrol and firefighting activities; May act as a firefighter; May perform clerical duties of very limited duration; May perform emergency first aid as needed; Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Interpersonal skills; Ability to perform general maintenance and semi-skilled trade tasks; operate and make repairs to small tools and mechanical equipment; follow general instructions; utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in maintenance and repair work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Graduation from a secondary school with specialization in a trade pertinent to the operation, maintenance and development of natural resources may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience leading employees. Experience working in a hospitality or campground setting. Experience operating lawn or garden equipment for professional or commercial landscaping. Experience in park and recreation facility maintenance operations; including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and structure repairs. Experience working independently on construction projects. Experience responding to emergency needs and providing snow removal duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and retain a Standard First Aid certificate and CPR certificate. Incumbents engaged in the operation of heavy equipment will be required to possess and retain the necessary current licenses, permits and or certifications as required by federal and state laws and regulations. Incumbents performing skilled trade work may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses and or certifications as required by a particular trade. Incumbents may be required to operate a motor vehicle and to possess and retain the appropriate valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, such as a Commercial Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must be in good health and must have and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to effectively perform the duties of the class.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury working under varying weather conditions, lifting moderate weights, and handling chemical solutions.
