      Job Description:

      We are currently seeking Environmental Scientists and Geologists to support the FDEP Petroleum Restoration Program as Staff Scientists and Site Managers. These individuals will oversee all aspects of the assessment and remediation of petroleum contaminated sites through regulatory closure while acting on behalf of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Petroleum Restoration program and under the supervision of a Florida licensed PG and/or PE.

      They will be responsible for performing in-depth research of a contaminated sites history as it relates to the origin of the petroleum discharge(s), key aspects of the site-specific geology and hydrogeology and any known historical data derived from prior environmental work at the facility.

      They will then use this information and data to devise the appropriate scope of work to continue towards regulatory closure of the discharge. In addition to the technical oversight of a cleanup, selected candidates will also generate assessment/remediation cost estimates, Agency Term Contractor purchase orders, review and approval of assessment and remediation documents, review and approval of invoices and other project related documents in a timely manner.

      Regular communication with Agency Term Contractor staff, property owner(s) and FDEP staff is also be a key component of this position. Very limited travel may be required for oversight of field work, site/project meetings, etc.

      Responsibilities:

      • Researching assigned petroleum sites through the use of Google Earth, legal documents, FDEP legacy information, etc.
      • Identifying the owner of the site, why the release happened, when the release took place, potential affected neighboring plots, etc.
      • Draft a scope of work containing the appropriate action required (assessment, remedial design, remedial action, monitoring, etc.)
      • Take appropriate steps to select contractor (could consist of drafting and RFP, continuation assignment, direct assignment)
      • Negotiate on behalf of the FDEP.
      • Monitor status of contractor (schedule, budget, progress, quality, etc.)
      • Review and approve request for payments.
      • Final review of work performed to make recommendation of next steps (ultimate goal….site closure).

      Additional Skills & Qualifications:

      • Must have 1 year of experience in an environmental or health related fields. A post graduate degree may substitute for one year of experience.
      • Must have Bachelor's Degree in the fields of Science or Engineering (prefer Environmental Science, Geology or Environmental Engineering)
      • Ability to effectively review and prepare technical documents.
      • Familiarity with Chapter 62-780, FAC, Petroleum Restoration Program procedures and FDEP SOP 001/01 (field procedures) is a plus.
