Job Description

- Perform district inspector and coordinator duties for assigned hazardous waste facilities, remedial action sites, and Voluntary Action Program (VAP) properties.
- Review environmental data and reports to determine potential risks/impacts to human health and the environment.
- Review and evaluate compliance reports in DERR’s hazardous waste and cleanup programs.
- Review, prepare, and implement work plans, sampling plans, reports, and technical memoranda associated with the investigation of environmental releases from hazardous waste sites.
- Provide technical assistance to citizens, consultants, and regulated community for compliance with requirements in DERR’s hazardous waste and cleanup programs.

- OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest environmental specialist in the Division of Environmental Response and Revitalization (DERR), working at our Southwest District Office in Dayton.

As an environmental specialist, you will be essential to the fulfillment of federal commitments while assisting with the protection of public health and the environment for all DERR programs. You’ll be reviewing, preparing, and implementing work plans, sampling plans, reports, and technical memoranda associated with the investigation of environmental releases from hazardous waste sites, as well as ensuring field activities are carried out in accordance with approved work plans and acting as the district site coordinator for assigned sites.
You’ll conduct and review environmental site assessments and site inspections, including regulatory compliance and sampling activities associated with the screening of environmental releases from hazardous waste sites. With these activities, you’ll be coordinating with other affected agency personnel, state and federal agencies, and responsible parties. You will participate in public meetings, responding to media inquiries, and providing technical assistance regarding applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and division policy and guidance. Finally, you’ll review laws, regulations, guidelines, policies, and standards to make recommendations for their efficient implementation or for further modification.
