Introduction

The City of Tucson is seeking highlyskilled individuals to operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment as an Equipment Operation Specialist for the Environmental and General Services Department. The Equipment Operation Specialist operates the front-end loader, backhoe, motor grader, and other heavy equipment to perform department related functions. Interested individuals should prioritize safety, integrity, and responsibility. The Los Reales Sustainability Campus hours of operation are: Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Including holidays, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. **Operators must be available to work any hours between this time and must be flexible with their schedule to meet operational need. Overtime may be available and is subject to change**
General Description
Operates and maintains a variety of heavy equipment.Work is performed in a fast paced, high traffic environment where team safety practices are essential and operation of equipment in all types of weather is required. Equipment Operators work in self-environment locations. This position is subject to on-call, stand-by and working evening shifts as needed as well as extended work hours. Work requires climbing in and out of equipment, andthe ability to work in various work environments such as: extreme heat, cold, rain and rough terrain conditions.
Essential Functions
Examples of essential duties may include but are not limited to: Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, haul trucks, front-end loaders, uniloaders with attachments, landfill compactors, dump trucks, motor graders, water trucks, water wagons and other associated equipment. Adheres to safe operation standards of heavy equipment such as observing appropriate speeds, climbing or descending steep slopes, maintaining safe distances from other moving equipment and maintaining safe distances from customer vehicles’ unloading areas. Employs industry standards in the operation of heavy equipment on landfills such as proper pushing of trash, number of passes for optimal compaction, proper loading techniques, skilled grading techniques and safe loaded-truck driving techniques. Exercises appropriate precautions by visually identifying hazardous waste symbols and non-marked materials posing potential hazards. and communicates with spotters for proper removal from the fill face. Participates in various work activities associated with job assignments, including manual labor tasks and guiding and directing others in the work team. Safely transports equipment to job sites. Maintains a variety of heavy equipment by inspecting equipment, performing preventative maintenance of equipment, cleaning equipment components, and reporting necessary repairs. Performsweed removal and asphalt maintenance. Performs administrative duties by investigating and resolving customer complaints, identifying, locating and requesting necessary materials, and completing logs and reports. Compiles daily equipment reports consisting of logging the number of daily cover or alternative daily cover (ADC), water and leachate loads hauled. Tracks the number of hours spent operating equipment
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D. Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of heavy equipment operation Valid and Unrestricted - Class D Driver's License for Environmental and General Services Department Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class ACommercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement for the Tucson Water Department *Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.basis.

Selection Plan
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a Practical skills test. Practical skills test will be held Wednesday, February 28th, 2024. The practical skills test will evaluate an applicant's ability to operate the following heavy equipment safely and efficiently: 980 Loader M-14 Grader D-6 Dozer *** The practical skills test will be outdoors; you must wear loose-fitting clothes suitable for a working environment; open toed footwear and shorts will not be allowed. Excess jewelry is not recommended. The required PPE needed will be provided. *** Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 5% of your rating for education and work experience 95% of your rating for practical skills test This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months. The highest scoring candidates placed on the Civil Service Employment List may be invited to participate in a selection interview. Veteran, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the achieved score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
