      The Prince George's County Government Department of the Environment is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Equipment Operator II position, grade A15, within its Bulky Unit Division.

      About the Position :
      This is a skilled craft position responsible for operating a variety of light to heavy-duty refuse collection vehicles, which includes 29-cubic yard packer trash trucks, roll-off vehicles, and open body collection vehicles. The incumbent is responsible for leading laborer(s) assigned to the refuse collection vehicle. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Crew Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of managing the County's waste, maintaining regulatory compliance, operational safety, and overall efficient equipment operations and functions.

      This work involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping, climbing. Incumbents must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Incumbents must wear and maintain a uniform and/or safety equipment such as hard hats, steel toed shoes, safety glasses and gloves. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the incumbent’s supervisor based on position assigned.What You'll Do:
      • Operate light to heavy-duty refuse collection equipment to support daily and long-term refuse collection activities.
      • Fulfill residential service requests by collecting bulky items such as furniture, appliances and tires per the assigned daily appointment schedule.
      • Operate equipment auxiliary attachments in accordance with Commercial Driver's License (CDL) standards.
      • Maintain required vehicle operations documents.
      • Maintain daily pre-post trip inspection book for the assigned vehicle as required by federal regulations.
      • Lead the work of assigned laborer(s) in the collection and disposal of residential bulky solid waste, including assisting with placing bulky items into collection truck when needed.
      • Observe operating conditions of assigned vehicles or equipment.
      • Report malfunctions or other mechanical discrepancies to the proper authority for repair or adjustment.
      • Adhere to and practice safe work habits in the performance of assigned tasks.
      • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level associated with the employee's class of work.
      • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.
      What You'll Need:
      • One year as an Equipment Operator I or completion of a standard grade school course and two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment.
      • Possess a valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.
      • Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.
      Preferred Qualifications :
      • Two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy-duty on-road and off-road refuse collection vehicles/equipment.
      • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake, Tanker and Hazmat endorsements.

      CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:
      • Must wear safety shoes meeting departmental requirements.
      • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
      • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, dust, times of day/week, including weather emergencies and other types of emergency conditions.
      • Must participate as an Essential Employee in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.
      • Must possess and maintain a current Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement, to include current DOT physical certification card.
      • Must have a current Motor Vehicle Administration report with a satisfactory driving record.
      • Must be able to work before and after hours, rotating weekends and holidays.
      • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical to include alcohol and drug testing.
      • Must be able to write, read, comprehend and complete electronic and paper forms.
      DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
