      The Position:

      Position General Summary:

      The Specialist, Exceptional Student Education (ESE) - FT assists the ESE District Manager - FT with staffing and transition support for students with disabilities, impairments, and/or students who are gifted/talented at Florida Virtual School Public Schools to maintain district compliance requirements. The Specialist, ESE – FT collaborates with families, schools, district staff, and external stakeholders concerning all facets of programming for students with special needs from pre-referral, placement, transition, graduation, and post-secondary needs. The Specialist, ESE - FT keeps abreast of state rules, legislation, and federal IDEA requirements surrounding ESE eligibility, Gifted and Talented Education, Section 504, and transition support. The Specialist, ESE - FT provides training to the schools and district in the identification of suspected disabilities and supporting the transition needs of ESE students and families to ensure successful outcomes.

      Essential Position Functions:

      • Serves as the point of contact for parents and staff to address evaluation referrals and requests for students with suspected disabilities or impairments and/or suspected giftedness

      • Meets regularly with Student Support Teams to assist with problem-solving for students

      • Compiles and review comprehensive data to determine eligibility and make appropriate placement decisions for students

      • Schedules, prepares, and facilitates initial eligibility determination meetings with all necessary stakeholders

      • Manages all initial eligibilities and staff students appropriately for ESE programs, Gifted programs, and Section 504

      • Ensures timelines are met for requesting parental consent, meeting notices, evaluation, and placement for ESE, Section 504, and Gifted

      • Maintains accurate and compliant records, documentation, and data entry for students in the SIS

      • Provides Prior Written Notice and Procedural Safeguards to parents to meet compliance requirements for ESE, Section 504, and Gifted

      • Utilizes the Florida DOE Portal to Exceptional Education Resources (PEER) program for ESE/IEP/EP/ 504 paperwork

      • Protects the privacy of student records per The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

      • Provides transition support for students who are transferring into/out of FLVS schools and/or transferring from one FLVS school to another

      • Provides employment, post-secondary education, and/or community agency support for students with disabilities or impairments and their families to prepare to exit the K-12 program

      • Provides technical assistance in the preparation of the Transition Individual Educational Plan (TIEP) to ensure district compliance

      • Collaborates with discretionary projects such as Vocation Rehabilitation, Project 10, etc.

      • Assists students and families with the process for applying for accommodations with third party organizations (ACT, College Board, AICE, etc.)

      • Collaborates/Consults with students, families, and other stakeholders to support student needs

      • Develops and facilitates trainings and maintains communication for parents, students, and staff related to transition services and support

      • Assists in the development of standard operating procedures for ESE policies and procedures

      • Continues professional growth through participation in educational conferences and other staff development activities

      • Stays abreast of all updates in ESE, 504, and Gifted state legislation and federal law to ensure student success and district compliance

      • Provides the highest level of customer service to students, families, and instructional staff

      • Models professional and ethical standards when working with students, parents, peers, districts, and community members

      • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, school districts, and colleagues

      • Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others

      Minimum Requirements:

      Education/Licensure/Certification:

      • Bachelor’s degree required

      • Valid professional Florida certificate in Exceptional Student Education K-12, Deaf or Hard of Hearing K-12, or Visually Impaired K-12

      • Valid professional Florida certificate in Gifted Education K-12, preferred

      Experience:

      • At least three years’ teaching experience in one or more areas of Exceptional Student Education

      • Virtual education experience, preferred

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):

      • Knowledge of evaluation procedures, staffing, and ESE eligibility criteria, preferred

      • Knowledge of transition services and support for students with disabilities, preferred

      • Knowledge of MS Windows, MS Office, and Internet Explorer
