      Denver International Airport’s Global Communications and Marketing team is looking for an External Communications Manager to join our team. In this position you will manage all external communications for the airport including media relations, crisis communications and our stakeholder newsletters as well as provide communications support to other divisions within DEN, create content for social media as well as the airport’s website. This role will serve as an airport spokesperson, including during crisis situations.

      Additionally, the External Communications Manager will provide high-level media relations including pitching stories, researching issues, providing interviews, and preparing subject matter experts. This role will provide advice and proactive support to the Director of Communications and the division’s leadership team regarding the communication of airport initiatives and issues. This position will be on a rotating on-call schedule, during which they must be available 24/7. The External Communications Manager will report to the Director of Communications and will supervise two public information officers.

      Additional responsibilities include:

      • Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop, execute, and evaluate strategic external communications.
      • Supervise the external communications team, which includes two public information officers.
      • Establish management practices and processes that ensures the accomplishment of performance standards.
      • Develop strategic messaging and statements for various issues and prepare talking points for leadership media interviews.
      • Provide crisis management and/or communications during emergency situations, acting as a primary information source to the public and media, and work with stakeholders such as police, federal agencies, and airlines to coordinate responses and messaging.
      • Serve as a spokesperson for various media inquiries.
      • Be on a rotating on-call schedule, during which they must be available 24/7.
      • Must be available during emergencies and work occasional nights and weekends.
      • Handle day-to-day media relations as needed.
      • Create, edit, and proofread communications for public consumption.
      • Develop communication plans and strategies for enhanced PR with target audiences and distribute that information to internal and external audiences through a variety of communication channels.
      • Field filming requests and either execute on the inquiry or oversee a team member’s execution of the request
      • Ensure newsletter, social and web content are relevant, accurate and informative for the public; review the stakeholder newsletter before distribution; and track website content and initiate timely updates.
      • Work closely with the marketing team to support the development of compelling and relevant social media content.
      • Cultivate and manage relationships with the key members of the media including but not limited to reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and other influencers to position DEN as a global and industry leader; identify and foster relationships with new media partners to expand coverage and pitch compelling stories.
      • Develop and execute media training for executives or other key DEN leaders.

      About You

      We are looking for candidates with some or all the following experience:

      • A true communications wiz with strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to boil down technical information to understandable and concise messages
      • At least four years of experience in communications with proven experience with media relations, communications planning, and crisis communications
      • Demonstrated leadership experience
      • Experience leading people, bonus points for leading a team with on-call responsibilities
      • Experience generating positive earned media
      • Have a keen eye for editing and AP Style writing
      • Experience with crisis situations and creating statements, talking points and interview briefings
      • Familiarity with social media and content monitoring platforms such as Sprinklr, Constant Contact and Meltwater
      • Experience in an PR/communications role within a large corporate or municipal organization that is as complex and dynamic as Denver International Airport

      • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field.
      • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional experience at the type and level of a Marketing/Communications Specialist in communications, marketing, and/or public relations.
      • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
      • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
      • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
      • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

      FBI Background Check: FBI criminal background check is required for all positions at Denver International Airport (DEN). Employees are also required to report any felony convictions and/or moving violations to maintain this clearance and be eligible for continued employment. By position, a pre-employment physical/drug test may be required.

      Snow / Emergency Duties: Denver International Airport is a 24/7/365 team operation. If weather conditions warrant or an emergency crisis occurs, all DEN employees can be required to work extended hours and/or shifts.
