Job Description

- Check factual assertions in podcast episodes to determine veracity and correctness on deadline
- Listen during live recordings and track facts and assertions to be verified
- Listen to drafts, checking all facts, noting attribution, and providing guidance on editing or adjusting material as needed
- Conduct quick and accurate research to gather and verify facts in collaboration with producers, reporters and hosts
- Work to ensure fairness and accuracy; correct contradictions and omissions in consultation with editors and producers
- Oversee the corrections process, ensuring potential corrections are investigated and updates are made, as needed
- Assist show teams in casting sources by confirming identity and background
- Work with the NYT newsroom's standards department to develop and uphold best practices for standards and fact-checking in audio, and train producers
- Research ideas to help develop future episodes
- Exercise news judgment
- 3-5 years of fact-checking experience
- Audio experience preferred
- Sound news judgment
- Able to quickly identify facts to be checked in a podcast episode transcript or script
- Able to communicate notes & feedback clearly
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Well-developed and adaptive cultural competence and emotional intelligence
- Experience in a deadline-driven environment
- Able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times
- Prior experience working in a fact checking capacity within an audio team

Job Description
Department Overview & Responsibilities:
The New York Times Audio Department is hiring a staff editor to fact check all podcast episodes of The Run-Up and Hard Fork.
This person will work closely with editors, producers, hosts and reporters to check facts, assertions and omissions, with extra attention to the tone and context in which they’re delivered.
The work will also include helping to research guests and sources, and providing background information using public records and electronic records. While the bulk of the work will be in the audio department, there will be text pieces that may require extra eyes as well.
You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced news environment, and enjoy being involved in multiple projects at once. We’re looking for exceptional news judgment and an investigator’s mind. And while we value deliberate, careful checking, speed is also important. The fact checker will be part of a close group of producers and editors, so a collaborative spirit is a must.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $109,521.19 and $115,000.
