      At a glance

      • This is a hybrid working role, therefore your time will primarily be split between working from home and the Head Office. The role can be based at either our Bracknell or London Head Office depending on your preference. If based in London, the normal place of work for this role is Victoria, London pending the relocation of the London office to Pimlico during the summer of 2024, after which the normal place of work will become Pimlico, London.

      • Please note that you will be expected to travel to other Partnership sites across the country on a regular basis. Due to the amount of nationwide travel that will be required for this role, a full UK driving licence is required and an essential use business car will be provided.

      • The salary range for this role is set at £52,800 - £84,300.

      • This position is a permanent contract.


      About the role

      At the John Lewis Partnership, we pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance. We have an exciting opportunity to join our Technical Services team within the Property Directorate, as the Fire Engineering Manager. You will be an integral part of the team, leading and delivering fire safety engineering across all areas of our physical estate, ensuring our safe and legal responsibilities and objectives are met, maintained and enhanced.

      As the Fire Engineering Manager, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and legality of our extensive physical estate.

      Your responsibilities will include identifying and rectifying any weaknesses in our fire engineering strategies, as well as spearheading capital investment plans to bolster our fire safety measures.

      Key Responsibilities:

      • Lead the fire engineering design standard application in refurbishment and construction projects.

      • Lead and set Fire Safety engineering design standards, supporting the design & delivery of projects.

      • Be a subject matter expert for fire engineering and design, providing technical support and guidance.

      • Lead on and build capital investment plans for the fire engineering category, supporting the upgrade and/or replacement of fire safety engineering systems & assets, including sprinkler systems and passive fire protection systems.

      • Ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place to control and monitor fire risk & regulatory compliance within our existing physical estate - inputting into the property risk register and internal risk management process, identifying areas of risk and providing assurance that our controls are appropriate and working.

      • Lead and manage external consultants, setting scopes, managing performance and delivery of projects.

      • Support and contribute to our wider Health & Safety and Fire Safety Policies and Standards and the delivery of objectives.

      • Lead on property fire incidents, run investigations with key stakeholders and identify recommendations for continuous Improvement.

      • Keep up to date with market thinking, trends, changes in design codes and regulations, accelerating innovation and improvements into our fire engineering design principles.

      • Develop and maintain relationships with industry and government bodies, including professional trade associations, Fire & Rescue Services, The Building Safety Regulator, Building Control Bodies.

      Essential skills you’ll need:

      • Degree / equivalent level qualification in Fire Engineering or related subject or equivalent experience

      • Membership (or working towards) of the Institute of Fire Engineers and/or Fire Safety Managers

      • Proficiency in communication and technical report writing

      • Previous experience in the application of fire safety engineering design within a commercial environment

      • Full clean UK Driving Licence
