      FIRE FIGHTER APPRENTICE

      (Fire Fighter I, Y01)


      The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Fire Fighter Apprentice (Fire Fighter I), Grade Y-01. The Fire Fighter Apprentice will be assigned to the Fire/EMS Training and Leadership Academy as recruits to participate in formal training and academic programs of instruction designed to prepare, credential, and/or certify incumbents in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical services.

      The Fire Fighter Apprentice is a full-time, entry-level position engaged in the initial technical training, development, orientation, and probationary requirements to perform emergency and non-emergency tasks in the areas of fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, technical rescue, and community risk reduction. Upon successful completion of Career Recruit School and under general supervision, incumbents respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations to perform necessary actions to mitigate such incidents safely to protect and preserve life, property, and the environment. Incumbents provide basic and/or advanced life support emergency medical care and transportation to sick, injured, or vulnerable patients. This work may expose incumbents to hazardous conditions/situations and includes the operation of emergency vehicles, apparatus, and equipment. Incumbents exercise some degree of independent judgment and action in the performance of their duties and responsibilities within the scope of departmental policies and procedures. Work is evaluated based on the knowledge, skills, abilities, and performance of duties and responsibilities associated with this position, as well as adherence to established policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations.


      • Responds to a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations including, but not limited to fires, medical incidents, rescue incidents, and hazardous materials incidents to perform necessary actions to mitigate such incidents safely to protect and preserve life, property, and the environment.
      • Provides basic and/or advanced life support emergency medical care and transportation to sick, injured, or vulnerable patients within the scope of practices defined by the State of Maryland and Prince George’s County.
      • Respect the confidentiality of all patients or clients and meet all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements.
      • Completes necessary and accurate reporting and documentation following emergency and non-emergency incidents as required.
      • Drive and operate emergency and non-emergency vehicles and apparatus safely and effectively and ensure they are maintained in a clean and efficient operating condition, as well as well-stocked and prepared to respond to incidents.
      • Participates in training activities and programs to maintain competency and proficiency in all knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position, as well as to maintain required certifications/licensures and to learn new equipment and techniques.
      • Performs routine housekeeping or maintenance to Fire/EMS stations or facilities to ensure a clean and safe work environment.
      • Performs community risk reduction activities including, but not limited to home inspections, multi-family dwelling inspections, smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarm installations, and public education related to fire and life safety.
      • Establishes and maintains a positive image and relationship with the public, community organizations, and state/regional/local agencies.


      1. Prince George's County High School Fire Science (Cadet) Program graduates who are at least 17 years of age are eligible to apply.

      1. Passed Fire Fighter I

      1. Must have either a High School Diploma, GED recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education, or an acceptable equivalent diploma from a state-approved educational program by June 30, 2025.

      1. Must have a valid driver's license by December 31, 2025.

      1. Must be successful in the Fire Services Abilities Assessment (FSAA) process.

      1. Must pass a Background Investigation.

      BENEFITS:

      • Annual Leave: 13 days per year for the first three (3) years.

      • 20 days per year after three (3) years.

      • 26 days per year after sixteen (16) years.

      • Personal Leave: 3 days per year.

      • Holidays: 13 per year (plus Inauguration Day every four years)

      SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants must successfully complete and pass all the following:

      • Fire Services Abilities Assessment (FSAA)

      • Successful Completion of the Prince George's County Fire Cadet Program

      • Eighteen (18) years old by December 31, 2025

      • Driver’s license by December 3 1 , 2025

      • Background Investigation to include:

      1. Credit Check

      1. Criminal Background Check

      1. Psychological Screening

      1. Medical Examination – complete NFPA 1582 physical examination


      DISQUALIFIERS : The following factors are considered disqualifying and may result in non -selection for employment as a Prince George's County Fire Fighter. Each of these disqualifiers will be reviewed for each applicant on an individual basis.


      Criminal History

      • Criminal conviction, guilty plea, or probation for a felony.

      • Conviction of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (breaking and entering, theft, arson, or assault).

      Traffic Violations

      • Four (4) or more negative points on a Maryland Operator's License or the equivalent for out-of-state licenses until the points expire.

      • One DWI/DUI conviction, guilty plea, or probation within three (3) years of the date of application. More than one (1) DWI/DUI conviction, guilty plea, or probation.

      • Any conviction for serious violations including, but not limited to, manslaughter, hit-and-run with injury, leaving the scene of an accident, eluding police, or any suspension, revocation, or refused licenses until the license is reinstated.

      Drugs

      • Illegal possession, usage, distribution, sale, or purchase of non-prescription narcotics, controlled substances, or illegal drugs (such as heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, etc.). Although the use of marijuana or cannabis is legal, it is a violation of the County’s policies and will be considered a disqualifier.


      Other

      • Any misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of any information on any application, document, or in response to any question in the applicant process.

      • History or pattern of alcohol abuse.

      • Previous disqualification from this or any other public safety agency.

      Additional or other reasons for disqualification may include (but are not limited to) the following: failure to meet physical standards; inability to complete any of the component parts of the selection process; and/or any other disqualifying factor as determined by the Fire/EMS Department.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Any of the following:

      • Nationally Registered EMT

      • Nationally Registered Paramedic

      • Successful Completion of College Credits


      CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT : All persons selected for the Fire Fighter Apprentice ( Fire Fighter I/II ) position must agree to and sign a Condition of Employment stating the following:

      • Upon completion of the Career Recruit School, the employee shall maintain all requirements for emergency medical services certification/licensure at the EMT or Paramedic levels by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) , as well as all EMS credentialing requirements as adop t ed by the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department.

      • Maintain a driver-operator license for the class of vehicle specified by the Fire Chief.

      • Maintain at least an overall satisfactory rating in Prince George’s County's Past Performance Appraisal System.

      • Participate in and successfully complete a mandatory Physical Fitness Program as implemented by the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department.

      • Successfully pass all formal training , courses, and academic programs of instruction in Career Recruit School.

      • Successfully complete Career Recruit School, the probationary period (1 year), and the Probationary Firefighter Study Guide under guidelines established by the Fire Chief.


      EXAMINATION INFORMATION :


      1. Applicants must first pass the Fire Services Ability Assessment (FSAA)
        The FSAA is a sequence of events requiring the applicant to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. This test was developed to allow fire departments to obtain pools of trainable applicants who are physically able to perform essential job duties/tasks at fire scenes. Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be provided information about scheduling the FSAA.
