  • Respond to reported emergencies with a company on a fire apparatus
  • Rescue persons endangered by fire and other hazards
  • Perform ventilation, salvage, and overhaul to extinguish fires and minimize damage
  • Perform first aid, resuscitation, and defibrillation
  • Inspect housing, industrial, and commercial occupancies, write notices of hazards and make re-inspections

  Knowledge of:
  • Modern fire prevention and suppression principles, methods, and equipment
  • Principles of hydraulics as applied to firefighting equipment
  • Construction and operation of private and public water supplies, standpipes, fire pumps, aerial ladders, elevating platforms
  • All City and outlying streets and the location of fire hydrants and fire department connections in the district
  • Federal, State and local vehicle safety regulations
  Ability to:
  • Interact effectively with the public and employees
  • Remain calm and safe during emergency conditions
  • Pass the medical examination, including vision and hearing examinations, and perform the required physical fitness tests for the position
  Education & Experience:
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying
  • Typical education would include a high school diploma, equivalent of A.A. or A.S. Degree in Fire Technology, or 60 semester units from an accredited college or equivalent
  • No prior experience required
  Special Requirements:
  • California State Certified Firefighter I
  • Valid CPAT Card within the last twelve months from the closing date
  • Emergency Medical Technician I or greater certification
  • Possession of California Class C driver’s license with Firefighter Endorsement “F” or higher driver’s license class, or the ability to acquire one within one year of appointment.
  • A.A. or A.S. Degree in Fire Technology, or 60 semester units from an accredited college or equivalent

  • Must have passed the National Testing Network FireTEAM written exam within the past year (from date of application). See test requirements below.

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list.
  
  Test Requirements:
  Redding Fire Department offers full testing services for the position of Firefighter through National Testing Network (NTN). To register with NTN and schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select ‘Find Jobs’, then select Firefighter Jobs and sign up for Redding Fire Department.

  • Complete the NTN registration process and schedule your test.
  • Review detailed information about the testing process.
  • Review the Frequently Asked Questions and take an online practice test (if desired).
  Upon completion of your scheduled exam, scores are automatically forwarded to Redding Fire Department. Candidates who attain a passing score on the entry level exam will be placed on Redding Fire Department’s eligibility list Redding Fire Department will contact candidates on the list and will invite them to participate in further stages of the selection process.
  National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the Redding Fire Department’s responsibility and decision making in the testing process. All candidate results are provided to Redding Fire Department where the final decisions are made.
  
  
  Oral Board Interviews: Interviews will tentatively be held via Zoom, February 6-7, 2024. Top scoring candidates will be brought back for an in-person selection interview on February 20-21, 2024. Fire Academy will tentatively start April 15, 2024.
  
  
  Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
  • Positive past employment references
  • Review of a driver history record
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 or older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test
  Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
