      The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Sand Point!

      What you will be doing:
      The successful incumbent is the crew member at the Orzinski Lake Weir and is responsible for assisting in building, installing, and maintaining a tripod weir. Additionally, the incumbent will enumerate salmonids through the weir and sample adult and juvenile sockeye salmon for age, sex, length and weight information using various fish traps and nets. The incumbent will coordinate daily fish passage counts, sampling, camp maintenance, communication with the crew leader; and perform physically demanding labor, while working around swift moving water and inclement weather.

      This Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 position assists in the collection of biological data to aid fisheries managers with commercial fisheries decisions within the South Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M). Daily enumeration and sampling of adult and juvenile salmon for age, sex, and length information is directly used to determine openings and closures in sections of Area M.

The Orzinski Lake weir is an intricate part of the South Alaska Peninsula Management Area where incumbents have the opportunity to learn key management practices involved with State of Alaska commercial fisheries.

      The working environment you can expect:
      This position is located on the Alaska Peninsula at the remote Orzinski Lake weir facility from approximately June 7 through mid-August. Facilities consist of a small cabin, banya, and workshop. Daily activities include passing adult salmon through the weir, sampling adult sockeye salmon for ASL information, maintaining the weir, sampling juvenile sockeye salmon for AWL information, reporting data to project managers and general infrastructure maintenance.

      Who we are looking for:
      • Experience working at a remote weir.
      • Experience identifying and sampling both juvenile and adult salmonids.
      • Experience with the ability to operate firearms.
      • Experience operating and maintaining small skiffs.
      • Experience with bears.

      Special Note:
      • Valid Driver's License Required.
      • First Aid/CPR Training.
      High school graduation or the equivalent.
      OR
      Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
      OR
      Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

      Special Requirements:
      Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

      Special Note:
      "High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

      An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
