**The recruitment period for this vacancy has been extended to allow for a larger applicant pool. If you have already applied there is no need to reapply. **

      What you will be doing:

This position serves as a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 at the Chignik weir from May through approximately early September. Applicants must be available for the entirety of the season in Chignik. This position is responsible for assisting in the installation, operation, and maintenance of a large, unconventional adult salmon weir, routine maintenance and upkeep tasks on state infrastructure, which includes scheduling and performing routine maintenance on three 20-kilowatt diesel generators, performing routine outboard engine maintenance, transporting and transferring fuel, keeping a log of fuel used as well as an inventory of fuel available, light construction duties, and maintenance of small skiffs. In the event of crew shortage, this position is also expected to assist in enumerating and identifying adult salmon through the weir and collecting age-sex-length (ASL) data from migrating salmon species. Both room and board are provided while in Chignik.

      Our organization, mission and culture:

The Division of Commercial Fisheries strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and well-being are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game's mission is to manage, protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources of Alaska. The primary goals are to ensure that Alaska's renewable fish and wildlife resources and their habitats are conserved and managed on the sustained yield principle, and the use and development of these resources are in the best interest of the economy and well-being of the people of the state. The field crew’s primary responsibility is to ensure returning salmon are provided sufficient opportunity to migrate through the weir and collect ASL data. The information that is gathered from these sources is essential to the management and harvest of commercial, sport, and subsistence salmon fisheries. This position directly contributes to the successful management of commercial fisheries by maintaining essential infrastructure.

This position also provides access to world class fly fishing, and other recreational opportunities in a pristine environment.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is located at a semi-remote field station on the Alaska Peninsula. The Chignik weir facility serves as the headquarters for the management of the Chignik commercial salmon fishery. The Chignik weir allows the benefits of field work such as working outside, collecting biological data, and living in a remote location, while still providing such amenities as running water, power, internet access, telephone service, and individual sleeping quarters.
