Under the supervision of a Fisheries Biologist 2 this position serves as crew leader assisting the Area Management Biologists with a large variety of duties including primarily interviewing marine boat anglers, sampling their harvested fish for the Marine Harvest Studies program and assisting with logistics and training. This position may help with cutthroat trout sampling, field camp logistics, steelhead/coho surveys, catching/sampling rockfish, and collecting coho genetic samples. This position may also assist with office work including entering/editing data, interacting with the public in person, on the phone, and in area offices, issuing licenses/registrations/permits and assisting Program Technicians as needed.

Our organization, mission and culture:
The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect, maintain and improve the State’s sport fisheries. This position collects important data for the fisheries research sampling goals of multiple projects including the Marine Harvest Studies program, cutthroat trout sampling, rockfish maturity and other projects as needed. This data is directly used in sport fisheries management decisions of salmon and groundfish. Positive, professional interactions with the public are essential for continued public participation in State of Alaska programs and to build Division of Sport Fish presence with area anglers, and educate on fish identification, fishing regulations, and fisheries research conducted by the Division of Sport Fish in Southeast Alaska.

The working environment you can expect:
This position will work in various locations in Southeast Alaska as needed: Craig, Klawock, Whale Pass, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Juneau. Work entails visiting local harbors, boat ramps and charter businesses to contact and interview anglers, and field work to capture cutthroat trout, rockfish and coho salmon. A variety of fish species will be encountered, identified, measured, and examined for tags. Housing in Juneau is not provided and can be expensive and challenging to locate but will be provided if the incumbent is sent to work in other ports.

Special Note:

• Valid Driver's license is required.
• The technician must be available for irregular work hours including weekends and holidays. This position is eligible for overtime;
• This position is physically demanding and requires bending, lifting and walking on trails, along streams and lakes, on docks, and on boats. This type of work will may occur for extended periods and may follow an irregular work schedule depending on sampling needs.

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
