      The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Chignik!

      What you will be doing:
      This position is a permanent full-time seasonal Fisheries Biologist 1 who will serve as the field crew leader supervising one Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 in the collection and initial processing of limnological and juvenile sockeye salmon samples while in Chignik (May – August) and assist with season preparations (April) and further data processing (September) in Kodiak. The goal of this position is to produce quality ecological data that will assist research and management staff to better understand drivers of Chignik sockeye salmon production.

      This position plays a vital role in gathering and providing robust information used in assessing the recent run collapse of Chignik sockeye salmon. Data collected by this position will also inform escapement goal reviews and approaches to fishery management that contribute to the greater goal of sustainable fisheries for Alaska. Specifically, the data produced by the incumbent describes water quality, forage availability, freshwater productivity, rearing habitat quality and usage, and juvenile sockeye salmon biometrics needed to understand variability in salmon returns.

This position will introduce the incumbent to analysis and interpretation of fisheries data. It also enables the incumbent to engage with multiple stakeholders and experience the majesty of the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island

      The working environment you can expect:
      A season for this position will begin in April in Kodiak preparing and purchasing sampling equipment and gear for transport. The field season in Chignik will run from May through August comprised of a limnological component (using handheld meters, zooplankton tow nets, Van Dorn bottle, and autonomous underwater vehicle, reading zooplankton samples, filtering water samples, and measuring water pH and alkalinity) and a juvenile sockeye salmon component (using beach seines and tow nets to collect age-weight-length data, genetic tissue, and bioenergetic tissue samples, and assess stomach contents. This position will return to Kodiak for September to finish sample processing and summarize data.

      Who we are looking for:
      • Field: Comfortable operating a skiff in shallow water, working in inclement weather and cold water, ability to adapt to schedule changes. Attention to safety.
      • Lab: Ability to accurately measure liquids, operate a microscope, safely handle chemicals and glassware, follow established protocol, and maintain a clean workplace. Experience using personal protective equipment and taxonomic keys. Proper sample labeling, handling, and transport.
      • Data: Experience entering and editing data, using spreadsheets and databases, organizing and archiving records, and compiling data summaries.
      • Work traits: A strong work ethic, very strong attention to detail and organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and work independently, ability to maintain an open dialogue and effectively communicate with supervisor, ability to be a constructive team member, ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy and precision.

      Special Note:
      • Valid Driver's License Required.
      • Requires frequent travel within the State (normally one trip of up to 3 days length occurring monthly).
      • Requires frequent use and travel in skiffs, often in inclement weather and cold-water conditions and some travel in small planes.
      • Will require working a flexible schedule, with some work at night, to achieve sampling objectives.

      A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

      Substitution:

      A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

      • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

      • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

      Special Note:

      "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

      Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

      An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
